Does the Bonanno family play a role in the montreal mob war? I read somewhere that Montagna was trying to take control of the Rizzuto organization before he was killed, so was the Bonannos backing him or it was on his own?

I think it was Montagna on his own because he was deported from the U.S. and wasn't coming back. I guess he figured he could take over the Rizzuto faction but he made the mistake of going after Raynald Desjardins after shaking down some Rizzuto joints and actually conspiring to kill Nicolo Rizzuto (and others). That was then his downfall and Desjardins lured him to that meeting that got him killed.
As for those 20 guys I think most are dead now, but the Rizzuto's have relatives trying to keep it going until the bust that got Stefano Sollecito and Leonardo Rizzuto. Nobody seems to know what is going on now with those two in jail, Desjardins in jail, and nobody seems to know what side Frank Arcadi is on either. Still lots of questions it seems.

The Bonannos seem to be too weak to have controlled Montreal, even via a proxy. Rizzuto thought so little of them when Massino was in power he more or less opereated completely on his own.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Gambinos have some connections to people in Canada, but the Bonannos just seem too weak.

Yeah, I heard some years ago the Canadians now answer to the Gambinos, however the Bonannos are rebuilding their ranks in recent years.

I think they purged all american invovlement from montreal. Probaly the 2 organization from italy. Just a show of force killed every lcn member that was there. Now all the recrutis join them.

Ya but that was only cause the montreal crew worked with the cherry hill brothers and a few other crews pushing the herion in 70tys 80tys. Them days are over the spanish islands have the strangle hold on probaly 90percent of the herion that comes into the northeast.

Scalish is right,in this file is listed 40 made men under vic cotroni.Cotroni was killed by nick rizzuto that become the defacto head of the family that until George from Canada Sciasciamurder in 1999 had tie with bonannos. Sal Montagna after deported back in canada tried to take the rizzuto family but only because was in exile and wanted more power. If in 1965 there was 40 made men don't means that nick sr and vito don't made another people throught the years.

Ive made this point before once joe massino was exposed as a rat turncoat in 2005. Everyone that wasnt a made guy in rizzutos crew just rebelled. They were done with his shit. The bonanno family crumbled. If massino shut up and took a life sentence like gotti persico amuso ect. No one would have ever killed his son and that whole shit since. That old mob saying i think vitale said your familys only as strong as the boss. Once massino was exposed all the criminals in montreal rizzuto used to tax or take tribute said fuck him.

Not quite. It was like Joe Bravo put it, when the boss is away the kids will play or some shit like that. Nobody would have been dumb enough to hit Nick Rizzuto if Vito was out and about.
