But lawmakers, and police groups fight tooth and nail when people want to monitor them. HILARIOUS!!!!

How could they think this was a good thing?:

The watchdog would no longer be independent

Lawmakers would vote to determine if a fellow member of congress has broken the law

The body would be prevented from receiving anonymous tips

Accusations against lawmakers would not be made public, as they are currently

I'm not trying to make light of street crime which is usually violent and which SHOULD be fought and addressed, but I'm gonna find it hard to take seriously these politicians who tried to sign off on muzzling the watchdog.

Crime is crime. The crimes being committed by elected officials have more far reaching effect than street crimes.

As usual, there's more to the story. Democrats, led by Nancy Pelosi have been abusing the process by routinely filing ethics charges against their political opponents. That led to feelings that the Ethics Office was unfairly targeting GOP members of Congress. Pelosi herself used to regularly file complaints on people she didn't like and helped widen the political divide. Before her the two sides would make an effort to reach across the aisle on issues.

Personally, instead of doing what a lot of members of Congress tried to do (and to their credit, Paul Ryan and Kevin McCarthy tried to stop them), they should have established penalties for abuse of process for those who intentionally file frivolous and partisan complaints. Leave the Office of Congressional Ethics alone, or even better, give them extra power to go after representatives abusing the system.
