Why would you think it was Tessio? It was Clemenza. Of course in the novel it's Tom who gives the meaning. In the novel it's that Luca sleeps at the bottom of the ocean.

It's just like the scene where Clemenza starts laughing at Mike's plan to murder Sollozzo. In the novel it's Sonny who starts the laughing.

to elaborate what i said earlier.....the fact that tessio brings in the package before the camera cuts to the fish makes you think that it was tessio who says the line. their voices have a similar pitch so it's hard to tell them apart if you're not listening carefully. it's all psychology....although i am sure that coppola did not intend this.


i know i thought it was tessio when this thread was started...but then i looked at the scene a few times and concluded differently.

if history has taught us anything, it is that you can kill anyone.

In the film, the line is spoken by Clemenza.

This is really even less debatable than the 'did Fredo know' issue (although he didn't), since the two voices are so distinct from one another and it is simply a fact that it was Richard Castellano's line.
