If a soldier goes to jail, what will the associates working under him do? The connected guys have to report and kick up to the soldier who supervise them, right? So when that soldier is in jail, who will they kick up to?

Usually, one of the associates becomes the "acting capo" of that crew. He handles everything. Any money that belongs to the soldier is usually forwarded by that acting crew leader to a relative or someone close to the soldier. Often times it's the guy's wife or girlfriend.

You should also mention that one of the main reasons many of these "made" soldiers flip, is because once they get locked up all of their income stream somehow magically disappears.

In the old days most of the LCN guys in jail probably did have their families taken care of. But today thats the exception and not the rule.

It's extremely rare to see somebody being 'taken care of' while they're in jail. It was rare in the old days as well. Money doesn't grow on trees. It didn't then and doesn't today either. What isn't rare are kick-ups. Unfortunately for many made guys, a good portion of them tends to get pinched with their entire crew. It's also common for associates to bounce to other wiseguys in situations where the guy they used to report to has been given a heavy sentence. That's what happened to Basicano's guys. All those guys were claimed by different made guys. Mainly Frascone, Mancuso and Sabella. Vinny's family gets nothing these days. Mikey Scars had a similar problem.

Id say this if the guys just a soldier but has a few associates who want the button bad and been waiting they take care of there boss well hes away so when he gets out hes proposes him to the capo or even the acting boss. It seemd that way around the springfield genovese crew till that guy anthony flipped.

Right on and one of the reasons guys flip .

There is not much honor among thieves anymore .

When you hear the old-timers talking about "honor " that's what they are talking about and as time goes by the mob loses guys with honor.

Shit now days they will steal your wife and your girlfriend and your business damn shame but they are all getting what's coming .

There never was any honor. It was very common for captains or important soldiers to steal a guy's girlfriend or wife when he was in prison. That was honor? The only people who got respect were high-level guys, guys with money and power. It's the same in the corporate world.

You are taking it wrong .

I am speaking from there point of view they very much consider themselves men of honor they were protecting other Italians and doing for other Italians then it all changed .

Not talking about black hand or any other groups ..but the Italian mob considered themselves men of honor.

They've always considered themselves honorable. And still do. It's just that very few of them act honorable. They only expect others to act that way.

It's pretty bad. I agree with that, but I also believe the top dogs still get 'taken care' of so to speak. Most of the captains still get money funneled to them while they are away. I'm talking about New York by the way. It may be different down in Philly or Boston. Although I believe some of the Philly guys still got money. Didn't Lou Monacello handle things for Borgesi? He at least gave money to his wife once in a while.

Thats a perfect example. Bent finger lou was his guy on the street giving his wife a few grand a month. He wanted his button bad and probaly would have got it if he didnt get picked up on a wiretap paying a dude to beat up another made guy thats best friends with the boss. Probaly reason he fliped he knew hed never get his button after that and said fuck i can get out of jail.

Bent Finger Lou was NEVER going to get made by Ligambi and he knew it. Bent Finger Lou is half Irish and his Father was a Philadelphia Police Officer. Ligambi still believes in and follows strictly the old school rules, at least that's what I have heard from a few guys tuned into the streets.

Is Ligambi still the street boss? I haven't heard much about Philly lately.

The whole thing of men of Honor its only a relic of the past while ignorant men mostly poor peasants really believe in the oath that made him honorable people much better than noblemen or normal thugs.
With the time the oath lost all his meaning first spoken in italian after in english with only few italian words. If you ask to modern day mobster what really the word "man of honour" means they could not answer.
The difference between italians and the others is that the italians use the words honour, wise ecc while the other only tought guy.
In italy the mafias always liked the drug because you can easly made money (in this is the reason for kill or die) the other things are only words.
The camorra use the money for say to imprisoned members "if you dont want that your family get hungry, keep you mouth shout".
But even made too many create envy, for example in Gomorrah a caracther named o principe (the prince) is able to cut the coke and made more money than the other capos that for this want him dead.

A relative of mine was a connected guy who did 5 years in Sing-Sing for being part of an arson ring in the 1930s. He plead guilty, but didn't name any of his associates. His wife didn't see a dime of help from his friends. And he was on a first name basis with Meyer Lansky.
