A rare combination of savvy and big-hearted, Garry Marshall, who has died at age 81, deserves to be remembered as a beloved TV producer, director, and actor. Yes, he was the director of big movie hits like 1990’s Pretty Woman and smaller gems such as 1984’s The Flamingo Kid. But I’d claim Marshall as foremost a great TV artist, bringing to the medium great generosity of heart that rarely veered into mere sentimentality.

Marshall grounded some of his greatest work — on Happy Days, The Odd Couple, Laverne & Shirley, Mork and Mindy, and more — with gags and direction that emphasized the humanity beneath the laughs. Marshall began his career as a writer, producer, and director of sitcoms that showcased comedians — The Danny Thomas Show (aka, Make Room For Daddy), The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Joey Bishop Show, and The Lucy Show. But with his TV adaptation of Neil Simon’s play The Odd Couple, starting in 1970, Marshall came into his own as a master of ensemble-cast comedy. He staged scenes between Tony Randall and Jack Klugman with the precision of a top-notch Broadway farce, and did the hard work of extending Simon’s creations, deepening those characters beyond their theater roots to become true TV originals.

The Odd Couple's one of my top 5 all-time sitcoms. Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley were the two top-rated shows two years in a row. The following year, those two plus Mork and Mindy were in the top 4.

For those who don't know, Garry Mashall was born Garry Kent Masciarelli in the Bronx, and his father's people came from Abruzzo.

This is just great.

The youngest son of the show-business legend had been performing a tribute show to his famous father in recent years. Ricci Martin, a musician, entertainer and youngest son of show-business legend Dean Martin, was found dead Wednesday at his Utah home, The Hollywood Reporter can confirm. The cause of death has not yet been determined, family members announced on Saturday. He was 62.

Singer Glenn Yarbrough died August 11 at age 86. He had been in declining health for some time. An original member of the folk group The Limeliters, he also had a solo hit in 1964 with "Baby, the Rain Must Fall."

He was on my list.

Wow, that's a name from the past. I knew his name and swore I had a record of his. I checked his songs, and I believe I had the 45 of "Baby The Rain Must Fall." From movie of same name with Steve McQueen??

Actor Hugh O'Brien dies at 91. I use to watch Wyatt Earp all the time. Always thought he was cute. Don't know if he's appeared in public lately but it's been years and years since I've seen him. RIP

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Phyllis Schlafly, the outspoken conservative activist who helped defeat the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s and founded the Eagle Forum political group, has died. She was 92.

Schlafly's family was with her when she died Monday afternoon of cancer at her home in St. Louis, her son John Schlafly said. Funeral arrangements are pending, he said.

Schlafly rose to national attention in 1964 with her self-published book, "A Choice Not an Echo," that became a manifesto for the far right. The book, which sold three million copies, chronicled the history of the Republican National Convention and is credited for helping conservative Sen. Barry Goldwater of Arizona earn the 1964 GOP nomination.
