Lobbyists for the daily fantasy sports industry were successful in New York, where the Legislature in June passed legislation making the daily games legal and then Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo signed it into law last week.

But that lobbying effort was expensive: $891,000. That is what three of the industry’s entities – DraftKings, FanDuel and Fantasy Sports for All – paid out. The money went for lobbyists, plus $250,000 for TV ads, $10,000 to run an online petition to link fans with lawmakers and $110,000 on digital ads with Facebook, Twitter and others.

The industry spent $100,000 just to bring two retired NFL quarterbacks – Buffalo Bills Hall of Famer Jim Kelly and Vinny Testaverde – to Albany for a day of meetings with lawmakers to press the fantasy sports cause.

“We did that just because I had seen in other states the value of having that star power ... Having them allowed us to get access to people because a lot of people wanted to meet them,” Kudon said.
