He got affiliated with the Detroit mob because after he divorced his wife in Chicago he married the daughter of vince meli who was one of the most powerful mobsters in the family.

He was smart he had nation wide connections in the teamsters and owner of a pair of insurance companies, he gained lucrative contracts with various mega-sized labor unions for blanket employee healthcare coverage.

this guy was major in unions in the 80s International Brotherhood of Teamsters President Jackie Presser was a long time FBI informant he died in 1988 he said that when he was elected in 1983 he was approached by La Piana, who promptly identified himself as a representative for organized crime families in both Detroit and Chicago and instructed any problems with either syndicate to be sent his way.He said that outfit made guy Dominic “The Big Banana” Senese as an organizer at an Illinois Teamsters outpost

he got made in 1990 apparently. Nove tocco said in 2000 that tony lapiana was now a capo running his own crew. He was very close to jack tocco they were very alike both white collar crimanls. Not like the giacalones they were and still are blue collar. in the gametax trial it was said that Jack Tocco had informed a witness that any problems he was having with the labor unions they should “go see Tony La Piana

his name surfaced in several portions of federal indictment that brought down Florida Teamsters boss Walter “Buster” Brown on charges of corruption in 2001, but failed to include him.

he is the chief suspect along side union power Roland McMasters, in the 1984 murder of Ralph Proctor who was a member of meli crew. Other suspects are peter tocco Meli’s one-time driver and bodyguard, Louie La Hood another guy linked to shaking down unions and Jackie the kid is also has ties to the murder

lapianas child hood friend was Anthony (Little Tony) Borselino he was killed in 1979 he was a outfit guy. He has ties to johnny difronzo.

he replaced Joseph (Joe Hooks) Mirabile as underboss in 2014. Joe hooks retired. He was always known for being major in porn he was nicknamed "the porn king" and he was the He was one of jack Tocco’s pallbearers at his funeral

he sold his medical company he built up in the 80s for 50 million dollars several months back. This guy is very rich one of the richest in the mob. There is a lot of rich mobsters a lot of these guys have huge amounts of money

Yeah it is amazing he has never been convicted of anything especially when he was so high up and in on a lot of union business...

He has to be all but legit now a days...

I could see him being boss over Jackie but he is too smart to want it or need it...has more money than Jackie

Jack tocco liked tony Lapiana more they where closer than he was with Jackie. Tony had a lot of respect enough to be boss probably not the giacalones had been waiting for decades for one of there own to take over Jackie was being prepared since the 80s. Tony Lapiana was prepared for underboss and tony pal was prepared for being consielieire them three were seen as the three for the future since the 80s.

La piana has a lot of influence no doubt I remember Scott said Lapiana could be the real power in the family while Jackie is out there in the open as the boss. Tony is prob all legit now he has anything going on now it will be other major legit business but to be honest a lot of these guys could all retire now if they wanted guys like Jackie the kid joey jack la piana tony pal etc but they won't there family's built this thing they will try and keep t going for as long as possible. Scott did say 25 years they could be in a bad state as none of the giacalones or tocco kids are jjoining after Jackie Peter etc those guys are 60s and then Paul corrado and Dave acarto there 50s. Scott said there is some young guys but 25 years from now it won't be led by the giacalones or toccos

As you said he wouldn't want it anyway and Jackie wanted it he was not going to fight him for it

Detroit is going to be dying out for sure because of Jackies mentality.

I am sure they dont have the biggest talent pool to pull from but there were enough associates and italians where guys could be made...

Jackie seems to want to really limit the family to what is there now, who he knows and trusts. He is already rich and doesnt seem to have much interest in maintaining or replenishing the ranks with made guys.
