NYC had Fiorello LaGuardia as it's Mayor in 1934-1945.....He was Italian with an Italian accent.....He went after LCN! He smashed their poker machines with a sledgehammer on national television and dumped them in the Hudson.

Some of the key players in taking down the mob in the 80's were Italian-Americans; Giuliani, Pistone, Bonavalonta....
As for the presidency thing, Giuliani could have got to that position.
