Mexican criminal organizations are the biggest drug threat to the United States, the 2015 National Drug Threat Assessment by the DEA reports. They already are the primary suppliers of heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana, but continue to ramp up production and trafficking to flood drug markets in the U.S. “These groups are responsible for much of the extreme violence seen in Mexico, as they battle for turf and attack public officials and innocent civilians.”

Call me naive, but it's hard to believe that so many people supposedly use drugs in the United States, suppoedly 8 out of 10 or some crazy figure like that.

It wouldn't surprise me if US Pharmaceutical companies were behind much of the drug trade masquerading as dealers so that they could get their medicinal opiates on the cheap from South and Central America.

The interesting development is that the Mexican cartels, apparently need MORE markets, just to maintain the status quo in Mexico. This is why you are seeing them move into Europe, and increasingly on the East coast.
Sinaloa, to combat the zetas and to compensate for losing an entire faction (Jalisco cartel) need the resources from new markets to maintain what they have.
It's been described as the Balkanization of the cartels, it's a CIA shell game...
Alfa, I e been meaning to ask you, that book, The Great White Lie, what did you think about the fact that they had a whole Bolivian Cartel, basically off the radar.
All you heard about was Escobar and Colombia, never boo about Bolivia.
One thing strikes me about the Colombians, they seemed to have a nationalist pride, and placed an emphasis on independence from the US.
I think this unwillingness to play ball is what made the US shut down the Caribbean cooridoor, and push everything through Mexico, who does play ball.
(I believe Zambadas son) Ridiculous that they can control the Caribbean with all the random islands a desolate coast, but they can't do anything with the border..
I remember in the movie Traffic where the busted trafficker was talking about NAFTA, and how it would allow trucks from Mexico to go to and from the US with the same impunity as a UPS. Clinton shit.
Check out this article from the Chicago Reader (some may have already..)

Funny you say that Alfa, my take on it was that they fostered the growth of pharmaceuticals, opiates, to recreate a large heroin market, which is what we are seeing now in Chicago. Lots of fentynal deaths, all of it comes from Mexico, the preferred suppliers...
Cocaine has been on the decline, weed is probably at an all time high, but they can't control the production end, (yet, but you see big money making their moves already) so they look to control distribution, by regulating who can sell and where, even who can produce and where, and I don't know how it is in other cities, but in Chicago the only real requirement was money.
No hospitals or medical people investing really, it's all club owners, and just money people in general, Any thought on any of this craziness fellows?

Well not only were the top traffickers not even in DEA's computers, but nothing was or is reported in the United States mass media. Meanwhile the Bolivians were dealing in massive quantities of weight, careful never to leave the boundaries of their country to consummate any drug deal.

Where did you see that number? It's not even close to that.

It came out during a court cross examination of Walter Atala aka "Pachi", the husband of Sonia Atala, former world class cocaine trafficker and CIA asset/DEA snitch. Walter had received or read reports that up to 80% of Americans had used or were presently addicted to cocaine.

It might be hearsay, but he'd know. His wife was one of the biggest cocaine traffickers of all time. They had a vested interest in understanding not only their market, but probably the largest drug market on the planet (aka USA).

It's in The Big White Lie, by former DEA Agent, Mike Levine.

Actually, not that hard. Take a sample of the population and give them confidential polls. Can easily be done.

saying 80% of US population has used/addicted to coke can only be some government propaganda. That's what the statement above was...coke. How could anyone believe a number like that? Defies logic...

probably generated by an agency that wanted more funding for toys.

Old people over 70 probably make up atleast 30% of the population so are we to believe that people over 70 use cocaine?

Highly unlikely!

5 out of 10 is probably more acurate

Anyone who believes 80% of Americans have used cocaine, let alone are addicted to it, is delusional. I dont think its even 50% even if you include other illegal drugs.

I think around 50% of Americans have used illegal drugs. Not everyone is a Mormon.

I don't think you necessarily have to be Mormon to have a brain in you head and use good judgment.

This was from the early 80s, I feel like that stat is missing some sort of demographic, like if you were a young adult near college age and had a social life in the 80s, you probably TRIED it maybe...
Not arguing this stat, but I will say this, I know people, and by people I mean suburban kids, that do shit like adderall for STUDY purposes, everyone smokes weed, i know plenty of super proffesional people who will take a bong rip with the best of em...
People should watch that movie Traffic again, the whole point is that drugs know no boundaries, not saying everyone is an addict or even a recreational user, but this country is awash in drugs, has been for decades now....

The actual number is around 1% for cocaine(1.5 mil regular user), that jumps to about 7.5 million who have ever done it.

Even among the highest using demographic (18-25, male) all illicit drug use hovers in the low 20% range.

Heroin use will continue to go up in America until the end of days IMO.

I can only speak for me and my friends... in the 80's I would estimate around 90 pct of my close friends were recreational coke users...where some became addicted... and about 50-60 pct of just people my age that i knew had at least tried it.

Some of those people are now millionaire lawyers and tech industry people, while others are in and out of jail, work blue collar jobs etc...

But they almost all did coke...at least one time...
