I thought of this question before and I assume that it probably has a different answer now than it did back in the earlier times but, I still am curious what kind of treatment is supposed to occur when a typical soldier gets anywhere from a year to 20? Life?

Do/Did their capos actually assume the role of provider to that soldiers family? Even for long sentences?

What if a capo gets jailed? or even higher?

Thanks in advance! Have learned a lot in this forum

I was wondering this, too. Are the tributes the same?

It's one of the biggest of all Mafia myths. If you have money on the street when you go inside, and a reliable guy collecting or running your book, that's one thing. And good luck finding that reliable guy. At least three out of four wiseguys are ON THEIR OWN when they go inside, and it often causes the kind of resentment that will lead a guy to flip.

"Don't worry about anything, pal. Stay loyal to me and your family will never want for anything for the rest of their lives." ---- Famous last words from a thousand anonymous wiseguys over the years. rolleyes

Thanks, buddy. Just very busy with my Dad's therapy. Eldercare isn't for the weak. Caring for an aging parent is one of the biggest challenges you'll face in your entire life. But thanks again smile.

Most likely the guys who run the family rackets are the ones that are at the top of the list for support if they end up inside. If its just a soldier who runs his own schemes etc. and goes to prison at his own fault than he's probably on his own. But if its a guy that the family put in charge of shylock or some other racket then the family probably feels some responsibility to help him out.

Very infrequently.

Angelo Prisco, one of the most powerful Westside skippers ever, is doing life at Coleman and his family's broke.

Rudy Santobello, another monster skipper with the Westside died broke two years ago. But while he was inside in the late '90s his family got squat.

I could list fifty more guys, but I'm just using the more "famous" names so you can grasp what I was trying to say. If heavyweights like that weren't compensated in prison, what chance does Joe Schmo have?

Point being, it's your job to make sure you have a stash for your family to eat. If you're a boss it's a different story. And if you're a gazillonaire like a Ponte or a Franco, where you don't even have your button, your family can feed themselves.

It's just like any other job. You have to save money, especially today where one RICO trial can cost you 500k in legal fees.

My father could be your father's father. He'll be 86 in November. But time flies, and the older you get the faster it goes. To me, 1985 feels like about an hour ago. But thanks again, buddy smile.

Amen! My Dad was 91 when he hit the floor dead. Up until then he lived a very healthy life. I pray this is the way I will leave my family ;-) However I had to care for my Mother in her years after Dad died. God bless you and your family. First our parents take care of us then we take care of them.

What PB says

And you have to figure it a reason a father will bring his brother or sons into the life as at the least they could manage their outstanding shy .

I heard years ago even Manna had someone collecting on his book

Are you telling me that Manna still has action on the street in 2015? Even though he has been in the can for decades?

I am going to assume that Fiumara was his collector up until his death.

Now I really wonder if Scarfo Sr. still has anyone collecting for him?

In Italy for example mafia, camorra and ndrangheta regulary pay the men in prison and the NCO fall when don't have more the money to pay the men in prison that are more that on the streets.

I know that Mickey Scars ratted because was shelved without reason.

I think if a made men a decent ring of shylock, books or something maybe some money can go on the jail, but with the long sentence 10 y to life,if your are a capo be demoted to soldier ecc maybe the family would buy the best lawyer but never more,in prison you're alone and is worse than the streets.

Bobby Manna?

True to this day. But he's the exception, not the rule. And he has one of the heaviest and reliable guys in your area babysitting that book. In my opinion he might be THE biggest earner doing life. Bigger than Persico.

Genie comes home to big money in a couple years, assuming he makes it. He's not that old but I hear he looks terrible lately.

But again, these guys are the exception, not the rule.

They don't call them the Ivy League for nothing. But like I said, poor Angelo ran part of that crew while he was Bronx based and living in Yonkers. And Rudy ran the Arthur Avenue crew for years with Joe D. Angelo's family is on their own, Rudy died broke, but Joe D left behind so much cash that you'd have to weigh it to count it.

There are guys who care more about the prestige than the money. I hate to say it because I love him like an Uncle, but Angelo was one of those guys. Rudy, too. Point being, even the Ivy League will leave your family out in the cold if you don't plan ahead.
