I gotta say, Fat Tony Salerno wasn't easy to look at. Most people only recall the pictures of him as an old man at the Commission trial. But I remember him sitting outside his club around the corner from my grandparents apartment building back in the '70s, and I've also seen pictures of him as a much younger guy. And he could scare the paint off a fucking wall .

Some people grow into their looks. Some people age badly. Salerno is definitely in the former camp.

I wouldn't say he was ugly as an old man but he definitely resembled a pig as a younger man.

Would he have been intimidating to a young man like you in the 70's, PB, or would he be harmless enough?

Well, he certainly didn't have that "kindly old grandfather" facade going on (like most pictures of Carlo Gambino seem to display), if that's what you mean. He had a permanent scowl on his face. Tony's brother was much more affable.

We all know beauty comes from within so therefor ALL gangsters are ugly.

I always thought Ray Patriarca's son Ray Jr was kinda ugly as he got older. There's one picture of him shown on an espn documentary about the Providence Mafia (you can still find it on youtube). He was balding pretty badly and wearing some pretty big glasses, and huge lips too!

In Mark Silverman's book it did show a picture of Jr. as a young man in one of his mugshots. He wasn't half bad looking when he was young (I guess being the boss took its toll on him!). Ray Sr always aged pretty well in my opinion though.

LOL, his face looks like it caught on fire and somebody tried to put it out with an ice pick!

Yo those little snappers that were popular in the 60 -early 90's you could throw them and they'd brust even on your face or arm. They had some chemical in them some blk substance tied ina white tissues like paper ...think they were called snappers not sure if that's the brand name,,but it looks like Sal as a kid threw them on to his face

You guys forgot the always ugly Joe Ciancaglini of Philly. That man would scare the skin off an alligator with his ugliness. He would also scare the trunk off an elephant. In fact , he was so damn ugly, when he would commit a crime, the cops would be forced to look the other way.

I think when he got older, he started looking like he was ready to barf at all times. Same with Red Levine. Horrible looking people. Ugly beyond words.
