its boggles my mind how somebody could kill so many people, be the boss, and no decide to flip till he allready lost at trial, and they still let this fat whale bastard back out on the street? for telling on underlings? they barley have even used him to testify at trials, they should have done him like fatcat or rayful edmonds and let him rot for life in witsec as a rat, I think Casso deserves freedom more then big joey does.

And the fact that the feds could say they flipped a boss. Even if he didn't have any more info to give after all the others who flipped, they still would let him for that reason alone.

The Fed's primary concern is destroying the organization, much more than the individual. So if they have to they will make a deal with whoever and work their way up or down the ladder.

You don't release a murderer to convict a Burglar, you don't release a burglar for someone taking bets, you don't release someone taking bets for someone pick pocketing a candy at at the local 7/11. You work up the line.

Pmac and NE both good points also.

MORGAN: Why didn't you fight him at the park if you wanted to? I'm not goin' now, I'm eatin' my snack.
CHUCKIE: Morgan, Let's go.

So they shouldn't have tried to flip Massino?

By that logic, they shouldn't have used Gravano (an underboss) to convict 7 Gambino captains, as well as several more Gambino soldiers/associates and captains, soldiers, and associates from other families.

He's probably talking about the punishment, though. Massino didn't even serrve that much time.

Sorry if it has been answered previously, but where is Massino hanging his hat these days?

I don't think anyone, including the feds, like seeing mob big wigs guilty of murder and a host of other crimes get single digital sentences. But again, it's about going after what makes crime organized - the organization. So if they can majorly damage a family, they'll make a deal with even the higher ups - who by the way have the most info on the organization.

Good point Ivy and I DO appreciate there are two sides to this coin. The organisation is the enemy.

I just have issue with Massino being released after such a short bid. He's the boss, the buck stops with him.

There is something fundamentally wrong with s superior walking free whilst underlings serve time. I simply have issue reconciling that.

Consider a military metaphor. Those issuing the orders are considered most culpable.

I agree. However, it's worth much more to cripple an entire organization than sending just one guy to jail for life. Massino was the key to bring down the Bonanno organization and put many guys in jail and provide valuable insight. In order to achieve this they had to make a deal with him. Massino delivered and the feds kept their end of the bargain.

I think a headline like " Boss Who Rebuilt One of 5F Flips" pleases big bosses at FBI more then letting the truth come out. They get info from someone that big and have it all come out it would show where they had it wrong and that they had tax paying Americans lied to by men FBI cut deals with and to get the prize they really wanted.

And as others say its crippling to the whole org with all the info he can give without saying who has done what over past 30 years. I think they know he was more helpful to them getting current info about who's doing what and how it works as opposed to possibly contradicting a guy the feds paraded around in past as some one turning over a new leaf.

Saying IMO it was more about what having a boss flip meant as far as the significance of it and the knowledge of everyday operations, crews, then them getting info on past crimes meant, info that could contradict others prior testimony they sold as truth.

Am I correct in recalling that the only testimony he's given was at the Basciano trial?

I know a lot of guys plead out because he flipped but that's hardly an outstanding record of contribution.

I may be totally fucking wrong.

Well, I finally got my pmac app working, so I was able to decipher that. And the kid is spot-on. They'll use him until the day he dies.

Do you have any idea how many petty crimes they're probably sitting on that they'll (illegally, in my opinion) roll into a RICO some day? They stretched the statute for those animals Eppolito and Caracappa, but they were wrong in doing so.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy those animals are in prison. I'm just pointing out how far the Feds will go to stretch that statute. He's theirs for life.

Is his wife still in queens does anyone know? Did they spilt when he rolled?

Wonder if he's friends with Vitale?

Didn't joeys sister divorce Sal when he flipped for her brother? Talk about egg on your face.

The only other trial he testified at was at anthony romanellos trial a couple of years ago. Romanello wasnt even convicted, so that doesnt count.

Judging by the book I read, Massino & Vitale's relationship is untenable. The Massino family had no love lost for him after his deceit.

I invoke my right under the 5th amendment of the United States constitution and decline to answer the question.
