Walter Phelan is the last man on Earth, but Grace Evans, the last woman, is not overly impressed with him and maintains her distance.

Hey New Yorkers! Part of the theme song of The Jeffersons stated that they were moving on up to the East Side to a deluxe apartment in the sky. What is special about the East Side and how does it differ from the West Side?

The Upper East Side was historically old money with lots of snobs (save for Yorkville and, of course, East Harlem). But a few years ago the property values on the west side surpassed the east side for the first time since they've been keeping score.
It's no surprise, though. Manhattan has become a destination for the moneyed. They don't care where it came from, mind you. Old money, new money, whatever clears the bank. But big money just the same. Anyway, as a result of that, the traditional demographics has been turned on its ears. Downtown property values are insane today. Thirty years ago when you thought of the West Village you thought of Washington Square Park, starving artists, and junkies doing the nod on park benches. Today you think Hollywood East.
To be honest, I liked it better the old way.

Is anyone watching "Secret & Lies" on ABC (I think). Drama about a guy falsely accused of killing a child. It is really good.

A signature 1990s sitcom is coming back for a new chapter. NBC has given a straight-to-series13-episode order to "Coach," with original star Craig T. Nelson on board to reprise his role and creator Barry Kemp set to write.
A sequel to the original series, the new "Coach" will be set in present day, picking up18 years after the ABC sitcom went off the air after nine seasons. Coach Hayden Fox (Nelson) — now retired from coaching—is called back to become assistant coach to his own grown son, who is the new head coach at an Ivy league school in Pennsylvania that is just starting up a new team. Kemp and Nelson are executive producing the comedy, which, like the original, will be multi-camera. No other talent is attached.
Fox has ordered 6 new episodes of The X-Files, last broadcast in 2002, for next season. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will return, along with series creator Chris Carter.

Have any of you watched the HBO special Sinatra: All or nothing?
I watched part of it and learned some things about Sinatra i didn't know. One thing I learned was just how much of a musical technician he was. Most people just enjoy his singing, but he knew alot about music and he put alot of effort into his singing and performances. Also, he was open to suggestions about that singing and performance.

Recently seeing commercials/ads, I am only just hearing about it. Yes, I do plan on watching. Are his kids involved in this special?
It IS on my list of things to watch.

TIS, Sinatra's children were not part of the portions I watched. The parts I enjoyed most were those where he spoke about various subjects such as racial segregation.

Saw a fucked up movie the other day Whip Lash what a fucking [BadWord] that kid is. He has a maniac music teacher and he puts up with this guys physical abuse.
It got me sick if I saw that kid taking all that abuse and do nothing. I would take the kids money off him for fun.
Then take the music teachers money off him.

Oli,
I'm guessing you saw part II.
I'm watching part 1 now and it's really interesting. It starts from his parents coming to Ellis Island, his birth, childhood, etc. Comments by Nancy Sr., Nancy Jr., Frank Jr., Tina Sinatra. Sinatra was 12 lbs at birth; His father had a job at one time guarding trucks of bootlegged liquor.

AMC is running GF all weekend. I tune in off/on. I forgot how much I love the young Vito scenes. The atmosphere of the era, the beautiful music (Love The Immigrant), great acting. IMHO, both DeNiro & Pacino at their very best!!!
Awww and now the pear scene. So simple, so sweet!

TIS I love that scene too. The scene, after Vito has done his bad deed taking out Don Fanucci, where he sits with his family on the stoop listening to the song playing while he holds Baby Michael to me is so beautiful.
Vito's Wife: Ah, another fruit. Fired again Vito? Last time it was an orange. The time before that it was a banana. You know Vito, I could have stayed in Italy and married Dominic, the hucksters son and had all the fruit I wanted.

The fruit thing back then must be like the flowers thing today.
Any guy married for a long time who brings home a bouquet of flowers is in SOME kind of trouble...
Maybe next time I'll try the pear thing and see how it goes...
By the way, the GF2 flashback scenes are a cinematic masterpiece. I love it.
I'd have to say if the fruit is dipped in chocolate like one of those edible arrangement fruit bouquets then YOU WILL BE THE MAN especially if you have it DELIVERED to your wife's work. All the other women will be saying what a wonderful husband you are. That will give you 100 points right there.

Hey New Yorkers. Where in NY do you figure that Friends takes place? Since they all hung out at Centrel Perk, I figure it was around Central Park. But that's a big park. Any ideas?

It was set in the West Village, Oli. They stated it a bunch of times over the years. The Village is well south of Central Park in Lower Manhattan. The exterior shot of the building (shown in almost every episode) shows the intersection of Bedford and Grove Streets.
And FYI: Greenwich Village is home to the second or third most expensive zip code in the country today. So unemployed chefs, out of work actors, coffee house singers, and geek paleontologists are probably commuting from the outer boroughs to meet for that cup of coffee today .

Well, does it ad up that a bunch of 20-30 somethings would be living there? Could they afford it? None of them had steady jobs (except Ross) until well in to the show.

Nope. The gentrification of the Village predated "Friends" by at least a few years. But to the show's credit, they did mention that Monica's apartment was rent controlled and in her grandmother's name. Still a bit far-fetched, though.
They couldn't get away with the premise today. The neighborhood is just TOO expensive now. A studio apartment on Bedford Street will run you two grand a month today. Easily. And if you think I'm exaggerating in the slightest, give Craigslist or one of the NYC realty sites a gander (Corcoran, Halstead, Elliman, etc.).
And if you've never seen a Manhattan studio, Oli, some of them are less than 300 square feet. That's a horse stall in your neck of the woods .
