NYC's Metropolitan Opera sends live Saturday afternoon performances by satellite to select movie theaters and other venues around the country. We've seen several of them. You don't get the buzz and the people-watching that you get if you were in the Metropolitan Opera House. But, the camerawork for the HD broadcasts is superb, so you get close up to the cast and see the acting as well as hear the singing and music. They provide terrific interviews and behind-the-scenes stuff during intermissions. And the price is right: $20 for a seat in the movie house, vs. at least $150 for an average seat at the Opera House if you could get a seat.
Anyone here have any experience with Met Opera in HD? I haven't. It sounds wonderful though. Does the theater get a large turnout for the shows? Public radio used to broadcast a show on Saturdays (I think it was called "Live from the Met"), of which your post reminded me. Specifically, I remember the interviews with the cast, directors, etc. during the intermissions. Of course, it wouldn't compare to hiewing the performance in HD on the big screen.

I've seen one or two of these a year for the last three or four years. I agree with everything TB said -- they're extremely well done. You can completely forget that you're watching a screen in a multiplex. I think attendance varies in different areas, but you can order tickets online: http://www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/liveinhd/LiveinHD.aspxNPR is still doing its Saturday radio broadcasts from the Met.

We've seen them in movie theaters in the Phoenix area. Always crowded. Every seat was taken last time. Lucky for us, we bought in advance online. We also saw one in a brand new (luxurious) high school auditorium in Sedona. Had to sit in the next-to-last aisle. "Traviata" will be shown here in Prescott at the Performance Hall at one of our colleges next month. I'll be sure to buy ticket in advance.

I agree, nothing can compare with the majesty of the Met. Just seeing the chandeliers rise as the lights dim is worth the price of admission. Embarassed to say it, but there's a certain amount of pleasure in attending the opera in jeans and sneakers.

TB, I checked the website, and there are a couple of theaters in NJ and in Westchester, but they're as much of a drive as NYC. Obviously, the big difference would be the price of admission, which would be worth it. Several years ago, my husband surprised me with tickets to Cavalleria Rusticana/Pagliacci at the Met. I had a glass of the house champagne when we got there and I got a terrible allergic reaction (big surprise, it was called Kritter, no lie). My nose was running, I was sneezing, my eyes swelled up. At the intermission, I had to take a Benadryl. In the middle of Vesti la giubba, my husband turned to me and I was sound asleep. That was the first, last and only time he sprang for tickets.

I saw Siegfried live at the Met a couple of weeks ago, having seen Die Walkurie last season on HD at a movie theater.
I found both engaging, and while obviously seeing it live is preferable, the HD can be as engrossing.
In a way its comparing apples and oranges, but that said HD is netter than no HD. It is just a matter of time before we will have these operas streaming on pads.
I saw a couple of others last season, and may or may not catch the final Ring opera next week on HD, although the principal singer is aparently sick and an understudy is doing his part. What's surreal about the HD is that people aplaud.
The upside is this is going to expose a new audience to opera, and will keep it alive for years to come. The downside I would fear is that it is going to hurt local opera companies around the country. I think fans will spend their dollars seeing the Met rather than some local company not doing it as well.

The upside is this is going to expose a new audience to opera, and will keep it alive for years to come. Sunday NY Times had two articles about Met in HD. The writer, obviously a New Yorker of means, decried Met in HD as detrimental to "real opera" because it doesn't have the "audience/cast interaction," etc., and will distort what viewers think about opera. What a bunch of elitist crap! Probably not more than 30-40,000 people total would be able to see Metropolitan Opera live, provided they had the money and lived in the NY Metro area. That said, I, like you, prefer live. But Met in HD is the absolute best entertainment value around.

No question about it.
I saw the piece in the Sunday NY Times and I agree with Turnbull. Tickets to the Met are astronomically high. I did get one for $47.50 plus tax, but was in the nose bleed section not far from the standing room row. Good seats run $250-$300 each.
This critic forgets tha origins of opera. It began as a working class form of entertainment, often done outdoors. Crowds were raucus, and would cheer if they liked something and literally throw rotten fruit if they did not. To some extent some of this (on a lesser level) still goes on in Italy.
At the Met on the other hand, I'd say 35% of the people there are as impressed with themselves for attending the opera as they are interested in the performances.
BTW when I saw Siegfried, it began at 11:00 a.m. and I was by no means dressed to the nines.

Wolf Trap Park outside Washington has a summer opera company and a fantastic outdoor stage. It ticks me off no end that they go years without staging one outside, instead sending the operas to "The Barns," which is otherwise the indoor winter theater.

Pete - If you notice "Cav-Pag" being aired, please post! I saw it live in the 90s (conducted by Anton Coppola, even) and would like to see it again (tho I can see parts of "Cav" in GF3 )
I studied Italian for 2 semesters. Not once was a "C" pronounced as a "G", and never was a trailing "I" ignored! And I'm from Jersey! lol Whaddaya want me to do? Whack a guy? Off a guy? Whack off a guy? --Peter Griffin My DVDs | Facebook | Godfather Filming Locations
