wonder if the Gambino family had a crew there to. I think that guy joe piney had a store there but I don't no if his crew was around the village. Piney's store was on the east side, pmac. He also used Lanza's as an office sometimes (also on the lower east side, on First Avenue). Chin's crew was in the West Village.

But what about the triangle, Pizzaboy? Wasn't the crew based out of the club? Of course. The Triangle was on Sullivan Street, off Bleecker, which I guess is technically the Central Village. But for argument's sake, it's a lot closer to the West Village than to the East Village (where Piney had his store). And today most realtors refer to the entire area west of Fifth Avenue as "The West Village." There's a lot of money there today. I guess labeling it the "West Village" gives it a certain cachet. God, I hate gentrification .

I think it was dominic canterino who took over that crew , hairy would be able to clear this up , he loves a good crew succession I sure do Dom, but the problem is that there is no good, reliable info out there on this. So far we can only speculate, I´m afraid. But I believe that "Fat" Dom Alongi was made the captain of this crew in or around 1969. His name was dropped during a hearing before the New York State Investigation Commission which led to actions taken by a grand jury, investigating Alongi. He therfore stepped down and Vincent Gigante was given the crew temporarily. Sometime around 1973, Alongi was back as leader of this crew. In 1976, according to Gravano, Alongi was made Genovese consigliere. Once again, Gigante was bumped up to captain. Later, due to illness, Gigante took over Alongi´s responsibilities as a consigliere. I believe Bobby Manna then took charge of the crew. Canterino replaced Manna as captain when Manna was made consigliere in early 1980s. In 1986, Canterino was indicted and the crew went temporarily to Benny Mangano. Mangano was made underboss while Canterino was sentenced to 12 years but only served one year in prison. Who the acting skipper of the crew was at that point, I´m not sure. But after Canterino´s death, the crew split between several guys; Dom Cirillo, Larry Dentico and possibly Fritzy Giovanelli and Angelo Prisco.

Greg also had a spot on Cornelia right next to Mario Batali's first restaurant (Po). But he was killed before Batali took that place over. I've posted about that neighborhood ad nauseam here. But the Village really was heavily Italian at one time. Bleecker and 7th was its own Little Italy. I mean, sure, there were always some free spirits and weirdos living in the Village when I was growing up in the '60s and '70s. But it was nothing like what it became. One of our properties is on West 8th, between MacDougal and Sixth. My accountant calls it Hollywood East. Even the gays, who are normally pretty good at making a buck (relax, everyone, that's a "good" stereotype), are starting to get priced out. A lot of them have moved up to Chelsea. But even Chelsea is obscenely priced today.
