The recent Lufthansa news, beginning with street boss Thomas "Tommy D" DiFiore's successful motion for separation, something virtually unheard of in racketeering cases involving multiple members of a single crime family, makes for three recent New York Mafia cases in which the Feds' once promising indictments slowly crumbled and ended up a shadow of what they were supposed to be.

As for the other two: one involved reputed Gambino crime-family associate Daniel Fama, who faced charges that were eventually dropped for allegedly driving the getaway car in the 1990 gangland hit on Edward "Eddie the ch*nk" Garofalo ordered by then Gambino boss John Gotti; the other was the "Papa Smurf" case involving a three-family panel trying to take control of the waste hauling business in the tri-state area.


One source told us in an interesting conversation before he went off to serve time that the nickname "Papa Smurf" had been fabricated by the pederast informant himself. Carmine Fatico was occasionally called "Papa" and "Papa Bear" by those closest to him as a term of endearment and, apparently, the wired informer -- whose job was to deliberately engage "Papa" in arguments and physical confrontations to prompt him to issue incriminating threats -- thought he'd create a clever and insulting spin on it, the source said.

The Lufthansa case was so intriguing, recalling the film Goodfellas, complete with papparazzi films and photos of five different gangsters forced into the notorious "perp walk." He will go on trial for a slew of raps including murder and racketeering in addition to Lufthansa. He faces life behind bars.

Vinny's son, Bonanno captain Jerome Asaro, 56, also faced life behind bars, but was able to plead guilty in Brooklyn Federal court yesterday (to digging up a years-buried corpse). He can get up to eight years, newspapers reported.Lawyers for three of Asaro’s co-defendants — acting capo Jack Bonventre, soldier John Ragano and DiFiore — had been granted severance from charges related to the 1978 JFK robbery when a judge agreed it was too prejudicial and that the three had nothing to do with the crime.

They successfully had their cases severed from Asaro’s and are now hammering out deals, according to a filing by DiFiore’s ­attorney, Steve Zissou, the New York Post reported.

Think the case is weak and wouldn't surprise me if he gets off or a sweet plea.

Did Feds Have Hidden Agenda in Targeting Asaro?

We found some interesting information about Vinny Asaro that makes us wonder if the Feds had a reason to specifically target him for what seemed to be 30-year-old charges, including the much vaunted Lufthansa Heist celebrated in the film Goodfellas.

Vinny Asaro was put up for boss of the Bonanno crime family in late 2011 due to pressure from the family's Sicilian faction in the wake of a mob hit up in Montreal. Apparently he had the support of three crime families at the time: the Luchese, Gambino and Genovese families.

A relative of Asaro's began wearing a wire in 2012. A coincidence? Maybe. We tend not to believe in coincidences when the Feds and Mafia are involved.

Vincent "Vinny" Asaro as noted will be the only one to go to trial for a range of crimes, including racketeering and murder charges. Four of the five Bonanno gangsters swept up in the January bust are negotiating plea deals to settle their cases. Asaro faces life behind bars.

the latest on that case was a few months ago when santora turned down his plea deal, i don't think a trial date has been set yet. I assume his codefendants are also trying to negotiate plea deals. one of the other guys, anthony santoro, was offered a deal for 9 to 18 years, his lawyer says he will also probably reject it.

think his kid have a better chance being tapd as next boss. if asaro was a capo he had to vote for tommy d to be the real boss so I think who ever it is has the power in that family to put tommy there.

Vinny Asaro got demoted to soldier a while back and his son, Jerome took over the crew, Vinny hates Jerry for stepping up and having to take orders from him. DiFiore brought him back into the fold and onto a 3 man panel running the family in 2012. Then the next thing we know Asaro is caught on tape talking shit about DiFiore

Somebody at another forum posted a link to an article which contained snippets of an interview with PB's favorite mob turncoat, Dom Cicale, where he claims to know where some of the Lufthansa money went. Basically, he says that Catherine - Jimmy Burke's daughter and Bruno Indelicato's wife - loaned the remainder of the money (around 800k) to her husband and Vinny Gorgeous for a business venture. Vinny supposedly blew 500k of it on sports betting and casinos.

Dom also claims that Vinny personally owes him more than a million dollars and that Vinny Asaro was shelved at the time of his bust.

Let's be honest, Asaro wasn't dumb or loose by mob standards. We live in an era where phones of citizens are tapped by intelligence orgs , much less OC members (I could make a case that any regular poster on this site is equally at risk for being looked at by these orgs). Half of the "stand up guys" we praise as being better at The Life would be equally as fucked if they were faced with today's cell phones and scrutiny as a cost of doing business. We inaccurately put them on a pedestal in my opinion.

b) Vinny A being shelved is common knowledge. And not just "in the neighborhood," but in the media as well. In short, it's old news.

Any one no what the new superceding indictments against this old guy are. Like the case must be week if there finding new 30yr old charges to hit him with the guys on his last leg.
