Heres a guy killed by Burke,Paolo LiCastri, hes a made man of Sisily mafia, likely to be one of the zips following Galante.Jimmy even killed this ranking guy. He was made in Sicily, but not in America, so he had no ranking here. Who knows why he was killed. Maybe he stole some of the money that was supposed to go to the Gambinos or Bonannos.

I think every one in the crew was under protection of Vario,no matter who he reports to. Then why did so many of them end up dead? Paul Vario cared about Paul Vario, his brothers, his sons, and the soldiers in his crew. It's on the soldiers to protect their associates. Period. Now do associates sometimes get protected by skippers who like them? Sure, but that's the exception, not the rule. By your logic, every truck driver with a Teamster book back then was under the protection of a skipper. Get off the American television, Simon. And by the way, welcome to the board .

in my imagination ,associates working for the family,so theres going to be some ranking members protect them. Pistone said when amother family would like to use him,let him carry some gambling businuss ,they have to ask permission from Sonny Black. Anyway, maybe theres not a rule, but the capos need associates to run business,he also hang out with these guys, use these guys as muscles, wont they show a personal favor on these people? I also read when gotti crew killed Tommy DeSimone, they asked Vario for the permission.

As I understand it, Jimmy Burke was a formal associate of the Vario crew, as in "on record" but this title belied his importance to Paul Vario in as much as he ran his own crew on the side...not something common to mere associates, but telling of Burkes reputation as both an earner and a killer that stood him apart from most other associates at the time. From all I've read and heard of him,his word carried weight, even amongst people of a techinecly higher rank. Without a doubt had he been Italian he most definitely would have been made.
Of the people involved in the actual heist, I think most reported to Burke rather than Vario and none were made at the time of the robbery.
The actual robbers who preformed the robbery; Tommy DeSimone, Joe Civitello, Louis Cafora, Angelo Sepe, Tony Rodriguez and Burkes son Frank James Burke. With the exception of Louis Cafora who was killed with his wife, all the others murdered as a result of the heist were people involved in the planning or clean up,not the actual mechanics of the hold up, due to Burkes paranoia upon discovering the size of the haul was much larger than expected.
Those wacked as a result; Parnell "stacks" Edwards, Louis Cafora and wife Joanne, Martin Krugman, Richard Eaton, Tom Monteleone, Joe Marni, Robert McMahon, Therese Ferrara and Paolo LiCastri. (not sure on LiCastris status made/not? he was included as a liaison for the Gambino's make sure they got their share) With the exception of maybe LiCastri I don't think Burke would have needed to seek approval to clip the others involved and if anything, the higher ups probably considered the more people removed from the equation with the scrutiny that size score was generating, the better.
As far as if he wanted to hit Hill, that may be different because Hill grew up with the Varios and was also on record as an associate directly to Vario. It was Tuddy vario who originaly put Hill with Burke.

I also read when gotti crew killed Tommy DeSimone, they asked Vario for the permission.
It wasn't as much as they asked for Varios permission in that he set DeSimone up to be hit by them. While Hill was away in prison, Paul Vario had been having an affair with his wife Karen. When Tommy DeSimone tried to bang her also ,some accounts say attempted rape, Vario told the Gambinos that it had been DeSimone who had killed two Gambino guys thus paving the way for him to be hit by them. Word was the Varios hated Tommy D and he was aligned more through Jimmy Burke.
