faithful I yes, I understand where youre coming from, there is no reason to keep all those files secret. there is no purpose in doing that. to an oc researcher like yourself, it seems ridiculous. it seems the government is for some reason trying to suppress your work. evidently they don't want public knowledge of vast fils of o.c. the question is why?

I don't think the government is trying to suppress my work on a personal level, but I do think there's a heightened desire to control and suppress information in general and that it affects researchers and the public. It's not like someone stealing info from the NSA and putting it on the internet, it's a reasonable request for information about people who are long dead. In the case of the NSA there can be legitimate national security concerns, but that's not the case here. The FBI back in the days of Hoover would hold back info if it could potentially embarrass the organization. I have wonder if there's still some of that thinking going on today.

faithful 1 I think that's exactly what it is, there may have been fbi involvement that could hurt the agency, namely, oc figures that may have compromised hoover. im sure there are many things about him that the public still doesn't know, and, some files may shed a bad light on him still.

I have seen lists of family memberships that have not been redacted - being a part of a crime family or even associating with known members isn't technically against the law (unless there are parole restrictions against that individual). Blood family members will, however, almost always be redacted.

Snakes, were you a FOIA officer at some company before?

No, but I am a state records analyst. All state records (at least where I live) are open to the public excepting those protected by a general statute or law. The federal government is a little bit more inflexible as to what they release as they can just give any reason under the sun why it shouldn't be released to the public, and then find a law (or make a new one) to protect that decision.

I was thinking of meeting with my congressman and coming up with a bill to make some changes to FOIA. Have an reasonable suggestions?

1. A citation or legal reason for each redaction.

2. "Fresh" redaction for each request. This may be unreasonable if some files are continuously requested but I believe it's fair. I would be willing to wait a little longer in order to have a more updated document.
