So the mafia really is just nothing more than a criminal syndicate and the government pretty much shut down most of the corruption and gangsters aren't treated like celebrities anymore and more like local bullies and jerks instead of glamorous players...

Once you sweep away the myths, Hollywood, etc. the Mafia has always been a criminal syndicate made up of thieves, killers, etc. The glamour is a lie. It's always been an ugly world, including back when the mob was at it's peak.
