"True Confessions," with Robert DiNiro, Robert Duvall, Charles Durning and Rose DeGregorio, is the most underappreciated great movie of the Eighties.
Seconded; I wrote about that
here.
Excellent review, Mick.
I absolutely second, third and fourth your description of Charles Durning. Saw him on Broadway a few times--wonderful.
IMO, Duvall's finest performance. Priceless scene: li Duvall shows up at fancy restaurant for lunch with his brother. Maitre d' glimpses contemptuously at him and says, "Nothing today without a reservation, I'm afraid." Duvall says, "Monsignor Spellacy's table." Maitre d' says, haughtily, "I was under the impression that Monsignor Spellacy would be lunching with Mr. Amsterdam." Duvall replies, "Well, you've made a mistake, f**khead," giving him the same, patented Robert Duvall grin that he used in GF when he heard Sonny banging the maid of honor on the other side of a door.
