I thought this was an old NYC LCN thing. Evidently, this a fairly common scam. I Google searched airport theft rings and a lot of hits came up for recent cases. Do the 5 families in NYC still do airport jobs?

Eyewitness News has learned that 25 search warrants were served at multiple locations. Arrests were made at various areas in Los Angeles County, including in Lennox and Inglewood.
Authorities say the people arrested are contract service workers from multiple companies, not employees of LAX. The thefts involve stolen property from checked luggage.
The law enforcement operation is a joint venture between LAX Police and the Los Angeles Police Department. It has been an ongoing investigation for the past several months.
