There is a reason that a high-profile government witness, post testifying, hasn't been hit for several decades. It would be instantly clear who did it and bring down a massive law enforcement crackdown. You can't kill witnesses in federal trials. Either you know the mobsters self-interest better than they do or that fact speaks for itself.

The calculus is different pre-trial or pre-indictment. But even that seems to have gone the direction toward less violence.
