i'm really curious, why these days i've never heard a homicide story involving mafia again? back in the 70s and 80s there were lots of homicide case involving NY mafia. my friend said the 5 Families had achieved mutual understanding, a peace between them. is that true? do you guys have another explanation on this?
sorry my english isn't good. not a native speaker.

There have been plenty of murders within Mafia families, year after year, usually over control of that family. I assume you mean that there have been no wars between Mafia families in NYC. That is generally true. Mafia families long ago realized that wars between families are deadly and wasteful. People get killed, business comes to a halt, and treachery and betrayal become the norms. So, when there is a dispute (or "beef") between families, a "sit down" is arranged and a solution is negotiated.

You are also missing Michael Meldish who was a pretty big player, mainly thru his brother that was locked up for life. These guys were terrors and big time killers (harlem purple gang) and Michael was killed in his car in a nicer area of the bronx on Nov 18 2013. If his brother was out they would of had to kill him too, he was kicking up to the Geneovese
Also these lists are of the bodies found, many more arent and it appears the Genovesse are still a very violent crew, especially to associates and they kill their own members too, lkely due to the breaking of mob rules, either cheating or talking or not following orders etc. This family alone is still hitting a few guys a year . They are still big timeplayers in the gambling, shy, union, contruction, port (NJ) , garbage (NJ) extortion and legitmate business and high end marajuana. They are just killing it money wise, not many brokers in this crew. Fairly amazing theirs success and IMO they are gradually getting stronger and expanding their territory, usually gambling and shy first and then more, professionals they are.
I still fee the Luchesse strength is and has always been underestimated, and I believe for the most part they have always been a strong 3, a good deal smaller than Genovese and Gambinio but still a strong 3 as their union and NJ crews are extensive and will never go away

You're right, there aren't as many mob hits as during the 1970'80's. The main reason is the feds are better at solving murders through forensics and informants. There was a moratorium on hits in the 1990's due to so many high ranking members being sent away for life. There are also fewer wiseguys out there these days. Most of the families peaked in size during the 1970's and early 80's after the books were opened. The huge numbers of wiseguys plus the drugs flooding the streets resulted in a wild west type atmosphere.

Great list Ivy. I've never really even heard of the Philly guys in the beginning of the list like John Beebee or Finelli. Any information on them or why they were targeted?

I don't think so but this guy has it on the map. 9/9/2004: Mitchel Engel, Gotti associate, shot through eye. http://www.timesnewsweekly.com/sites/www...ERS%20SEAT.htmlWilliam Romano was killed in Brooklyn (along with his girlfriend Aliza Aronova) by the Bonannos with permission from the Genovese. She was obviously an innocent bystander. NYpost: "In April, another longtime Genovese associate, William Romano, 71, was bludgeoned to death, along with his girlfriend, Elviza Aronova, 37, over a drug deal gone awry. Romano had been running things on the street for his capo, Salvatore “Sally Dogs” Lombardo, who was cooling his heels in prison. Lombardo was a known heroin dealer who was in constant contact with Romano, even while in the can, sources said. But Romano had recently borrowed $200,000 from the Bonanno crime family to negotiate a heroin deal, The Post has learned, and apparently didn’t pay it back. A few days later, he and his girlfriend became two more mob fatalities." Philadelphia Don Angelo Bruno was whacked by his own men in 1980. His successor, Philip "Chicken Man" Testa, was whacked the following year. Gotti arranged for the murder of Paul Castellano and his underboss, Tommy Bilotti, in 1985. Gotti was nearly killed in a car bombing the following year that took the life of his underboss.

Some of you guys are making too much of members "disappearing." Because when a known associate or LCN member vanishes, it usually makes the same headlines that a murder would. And that was the whole point of the "moratorium" placed on mob murders back in the '90s: to make less headlines, not more.
So yeah, guys are still getting killed in that life. But overall, the numbers are WAAAAAY down. It's what's allowing them to survive, and the smarter bosses know this. If bodies started dropping left and right like they were years ago, the Feds would turn the heat right back up. And again, the smarter bosses know this. That's why you don't see as many mob murders today.
There's been a bit of a resurgence, but you have to realize that they're still only as strong as the Feds allow them to be. If they're smart, they'll keep the status quo with the killings (only when ABSOLUTELY necessary). Otherwise they run the risk of tugging on Superman's cape.
