Supposedly (from some fans at the Star Wars site), Anakin is kept alive by 'force rage' - a level of hatred so deep that it prevents death. The book version has Anakin shouting 'I hate you' to Obi-Won; OB1 has just severed his remaining real limbs and Anakin's remaining torso is sliding into the lava. So because he reaches a pure level of hatred, the dark side of the force rewards him by shielding him from death.
