I don't think it was a suicide. Most likely just a batch of stronger then usual H or maybe it was that fenatyl stuff again.

I read in one of the local papers here there was a string of od's a few years ago connected to people shooting up fenatyl thinking it was heroin.

Hoffman has been in a lot of pretty good movies over the years. Always liked him as Lester Bangs in Almost Famous among other roles he's played.

If you go on youtube and watch the episode of Drugs Inc.( from NatGeo) one of the junkies (I believe his name was Matthew) says this almost exactly. Maybe instead of calling their stuff things like 'da bomb' or superman, they can call their next batch 'Hoffman'.

Really sad stuff . Incredible actor, no doubt one of the best of his generation. He was amazing in Capote, 25th Hour,T he Talented Mr. Ripley and as Giancarlo mentioned Almost Famous. For me he will always be remembered for his performances in Paul Thomas Anderson films, Boogie Nights,Magnolia,Punch Drunk Love and The Master. I don't have any interest in any celebrities personal lives, so i didn't have a clue that he was a junkie.

Hoffmans most frequent collabrator, Paul Thomas Anderson is making an adaptation of Thomas Pynchons, Inherent Vice this year, the first filmed version of one of Pynchons novels. Coincidentally it's only the 2nd of PTA'S 7 movies that Hoffman wasn't cast in after There Will Be Blood. Which means that Hoffmans last film will be that crappy Hunger Games sequel

I was really surprised that Hoffman died this way since I never knew of his past drug history. Very sad that he was off the stuff for 20+ years and one slip up pretty much cost his life.

What's even more sad if it's true, is that the news might have leaked this before the family was informed.

I bet there are numerous junkies in NYC and the surrounding areas asking for it by name now.

My father is a retired pharmacist and he told my brother and I a story about one of the younger guys he worked with who he suspected was using. My dad found the young guy nodded off with a needle stuck in his arm and fentanyl very close by. He lost his job and his pharmacy license which I think takes up to 5 years to get.

First of all, it's good to see you posting, Dap. I know your reasons for staying away, but you can still send a guy a pm once in awhile .

Now on to Hoffman. Do you remember my building on West 8th Street where I offered you the apartment awhile back?

Now given the proximity of the building to Washington Square Park, and knowing the city as you do, it will come as no surprise for you to hear that I've seen Hoffman in the park with his son at least two or three times. Cute, happy kid with long shaggy hair, just like his father. So I feel terrible for the kids and for their mother. I really do. But it's just getting harder and harder for me to sympathize with Hollywood types who do this to themselves.

Now addiction is an awful thing, but he had the money for the best rehabs available to man. On a snowy day like this there are about 400 people at Bellevue or Saint Barnabas waiting for a bed to detox in. And it's gonna be a painful wait for them. Not so for people like Hoffman and Whitney Houston. They didn't WANT to sober up. And now they're dead.

About Hoffman....it's a real shame. Very talented guy, he'll be missed. Unfortunately i've lost a few friends to that shit over the years...good guys that just got into the wrong shit. Never did the stuff myself so i really don't know what the attraction is but if it's like most drugs your always chasing that first high.

If what the press is reporting is true it's a pretty sad way to go out. Sitting only in your underwear in the bathroon with the needle still in your arm.....just sad. Must of been potent dope to do it that quickly.....he didn't even take the needle out.

Either strong dope or that fentanyl stuff again. I read its many times as strong as heroin and it's caused many deaths from people shooting it up thinking it was heroin. There was an epidemic of deaths from that crap around here in south jersey a few years ago.

That woman bounty hunter from L.A....Domino died from fentanyl years ago. They made that movie Domino based on her life. Mickey Rourke was in it.

Because we're leaving on the red-eye late tomorrow night (Mrs. Pizza can't fly during the day because she gets migraines). We're a bit late this year because we had a few things going on up here. But I hope to stay uninterrupted until at least Easter week this year. But I always say that, and something always brings me back at least once or twice .

It's not an issue in Greenwich Village today because the rents are so high (and so are my expenses, so don't go counting my money ). But in Queens and the Bronx we literally have no choice. It's a necessary evil.

I don't watch a lot of movies, but I was a fan of his. He was outstanding in Capote, and had a mind-boggling range of creating characters. I first became a fan when I saw him in Boogie Nights. This is a terrible and senseless loss.

Some great roles from PSH that stand out in my mind are Boogie Nights, The Big Lebowski, Almost Famous, Along Came Polly.. He was a great actor. RIP.

Agreed. You won´t find a better character actor than Hoffman, at least not among those who are active today. In many of his films he often played spineless and shady characters and that´s perhaps why I never found him particularly likeable. He played those kind of roles to perfection, though.
