i might sound really stupid here, but is the reason sollozzo tries to kill the don because the don refuses to be part of the drugs deal and share his politictions?....
also, why does michael kill the other 2 heads of the new york families, as well as tattagllia and barzini?

yes sollozzo tried to kill the don becuase he don't want to share his political powers.
But Sollozzo wasn't a head of on of the New York five families. He had no family but he get the support of Tattaglia and Barzini. Sollozzo was just a narcotics man.
And the war was between the Corleone family who was against drugs and sollozzo and Barzini, Tattglia who want drugs and sollozzo. Cuneo and Strachi (the other 2 familys) just take side of Barzini and Tattaglia.

during the meeting with sollozzo sonny makes the mistake of showing absolute interest into what sollozzo and the tataglia family has to offer. sollozzo sees that there is a possbility for the corleone family to have a partnership in all this, that is if don vito corleone is out of the picture. sollozzo's attempt on don corleone's life is done in hopes that with sonny taking over the family, there will be a successful partnership in the future.
as hagen said, the rest of the five families have gone along with sollozzo and the tataglia's in hopes of preventing a full scale war, and now the corleone's are outcasts. michael understands that the only way to save the corleone family is to eliminate all their threats and enemies
