A good actor, I'll best remember him for a remark by Groucho Marx; Marx once ended a letter to someone asking, "Did you ever notice that the name Peter O'Toole has a double phallic meaning"?

Lawrence of Arabia stands as one of the greatest pictures ever made, and O'Toole's performance (his debut) is one for the ages. This is a huge loss.

Excellent actor and film.

I know there are lots of stories about the partying of the rat pack in the 60s, but they were rank amateurs when compared to the exploits of Peter O'Toole, Richard Burton, Richard Harris and Peter Finch.

O'Toole and Harris were classic interviews whenever they were on talk shows.

Michael Caine told a story once when he was an understudy for O'Toole. He took Caine out for a night of heavy drinking and celebrating, which ended up with Caine waking up in a strange place, finding O'Toole passed out near him. Caine woke him and asked what time it was, and O'Toole, fighting the effects of drunkenness, answered, "Never mind the time. What f***ing day is it?"

As it turned out it was early evening, two days after they had begun drinking.
