Can it still be a viable LCN family without an underboss? I've heard the SJ family was still around for many years from when Angelo Marino died in 1983 to 1995 when the family decided to split up, with the consigliere moving to Sicily. What are your thoughts? Also, the L.A. family didn't have a consigliere after Giacomo "Jack" LoCicero died in 1988.

A mob family doesn't usually operate without an underboss but it's conceivable they could do , although a boss usually always has a right hand man who is like an underboss anyway , families have been more known for not operating with a consigliere than not having an underboss

Yep, as long as they have a ruling panel.

Well...off the top of my head, there were parts of the 1970s the Colombos lacked an underboss. And in the early part of the 1980s, Bonannos did not not have an underboss. I guess it´s possible that a crime family could operate without having someone in this position, but it´s always better to have one. He is the second in command and acts as the boss would act in situations when the boss is absent. That´s why very often the underboss is a man who shares the boss´ opinions and views on different matters. Having an underboss, contributes to the stability of a Family.

Right on bro. Thanks Knuckz. I figured that. How long in the 70's did the Colombo's not have an underboss?

Colombo´s underboss Salvatore Mineo retired in 1971. Tony "Abby" Abbatemarco was made underboss in 1973. In 1977, Abbatemarco was shelved for being a part of a faction, unhappy with the Persicos. In 1979, Carmine Persico, just released from prison, became underboss.

So between 1971 and 1973, and between 1977 and 1979, the Colombos did not have an underboss. Not even an acting one.

Wasnt sal vitale pretty much considered an empty suit, seeing that massino forbade to meet with the captains, so it seems it wouldnt have really effected the way the bonnanos operated if they didnt have an offcial underboss.

I'm actually going have to agree with Knuckz. His info has always been right on the money before. I've heard that they didn't have an underboss in the late 70's as well or an acting underboss.

This has to be an assumption from your part, since you can´t answer my question. Your assumption is wrong, btw. I´m not bullshitting when posting. The Colombos did not have an underboss, official or acting, within the timeframes mentioned above.

I know the aloi family particular Benedetto has assumed a leadership role along with his father Sebastian who was on the administration in an acting capacity in the late 70s , I've studied the mob for nearly 30 years and read extensively on the Colombo family , we're did u get your information that there wasn't an underboss ?? I guess this is assumption on your part also

First you say S. Aloi was acing ub in the early 1970s. Now it looks like you´re saying he was acting ub in the late 1970s. Make up your mind, please. If you´ve studied the Colombos for nearly 30 years, you ought to know that Carmine Persico was the official ub in 1979. May I suggest you read up on Greg Scarpa´s files instead of reading MafiaWiki?
