Dick Van Dyke, 87, cheated death yesterday when he was pulled from his burning car moments before it became engulfed in flames. Then he went home and tripped over the ottoman. I'm guessing that Buddy and Sally are both dead. Actually, Rose Marie (Sally) is still with us. She turned 90 on August 15. Signor V.

Okay, thanks! Haven't been around much lately, but I'll try and pop in more often if I can. Regarding Julie Harris, perhaps some of the older members might recall her wonderful performance as Emily Dickinson in the one-woman show, The Belle of Amherst, first on Broadway, then as a PBS special presentation. But what most folks have forgotten is that in the early 1950's, way before Cabaret and Liza Minnelli, Julie Harris was the original Sally Bowles in the non-musical play, I Am A Camera. It was filmed in 1955, but the film is rarely shown. Signor V.

L. C. Greenwood, Member of ‘Steel Curtain,’ Dies at 67 By WILLIAM YARDLEY L. C. Greenwood, a 6-foot-6 blend of power, speed and style who as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ “Steel Curtain” defense in the 1970s helped lead his team to four Super Bowl victories, died on Sunday in Pittsburgh. He was 67.
The cause was kidney failure, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office said.
Greenwood, who had been skinny in college but bulked up to 245 pounds as a professional, played left defensive end, lining up alongside three players with whom he formed one of the most oppressive defensive lines in the history of the National Football League: “Mean” Joe Greene at left tackle, Ernie Holmes at right tackle and Dwight White at right end.
In technical football terms, they were the front four in a 4-3 defense. But after their repeated success prompted a local radio station to name the group as a whole, they became the Steel Curtain.
Greenwood, a master of the quarterback sack, was known for balancing a freewheeling playing style with a remarkable ability to avoid injury. Flying off the left edge, he might not have been as famous as the man rushing in beside him — Greene was the only member of the foursome elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame — but he was no less fierce or feared. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/01/sports...at-67.html?_r=0

Ken Norton, the former heavyweight boxing champion from the 1970s died today. He was 70 years old.
Norton was a better fighter, IMHO, than he is generally given credit for. He beat Muhammad Ali when he broke his jaw in 1973. He also had one of the best fights I've ever seen (on tape) when he fought Larry Holmes (and lost). That was a great fighter, but there is one statistic that will dog him forever. He is the only heavyweight champ ever to hold the title who never won a title match.

Mark Brandon Read, a notorious Australian criminal and self-described “murdering maggot” who spun tales from his violent history into a successful comedy routine and 10 top-selling books, including one illustrated for children, died on Wednesday in Melbourne. He was 58.
The cause was liver cancer, his manager, Andrew Parisi, said in a statement.
Mr. Read, a folk hero known as Chopper to his countrymen, claimed that all his books were based on his life, which he began as an unwanted child and proceeded through phases as a juvenile thug, mob enforcer, kidnapper and contract killer. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/15/world/asia/mark-b-read-criminal-turned-author-dies-at-58.html
