Exclusive: Toronto ‘ndrangheta in the Spotlight

The organized crime scene in Toronto has come under some media spotlight recently, with a corruption inquiry into Québec’s construction industry and the possible move of recently freed Montreal mob boss Vito Rizzuto to Toronto making headlines.

Rizzuto was in Toronto this week meeting New York mafia figures, underlying the historic links between the Sicilian crime communities in Montreal and the Big Apple. In Toronto, however, the Italian community and the resulting mob presence are generally Calabrese, maintaining ties to a greater ‘Ndrangheta board of control in the Calabrian region. The fertile ground of Ontario, referred to as part of “America” – a label for much of North America in rural Italian discourse — is home to cells in Toronto, Hamilton, London, Windsor, and even Thunder Bay, according to Italian investigators.

In Italy, general laws against membership in a criminal organization mean that prosecutors often publicly name targets who are living freely in Canada and are unlikely to be extradited. Through their reports and media stories from the past few years, I’ve taken a page from the Sopranos and constructed a hierarchy of the Toronto-based board of control (click for detail), reporting to the La Provincia board of control back in Italy.

UPDATE: In 2013, Thunder Bay’s Giuseppe Bruzzese and three of that city’s cell were the subject of arrest warrants issued in Italy. In September, Carmelo Bruzzese was arrested at home in Vaughan by an Immigration Task Force and looks set to be deported on gang-affiliation charges. He’ll face an outstanding arrest warrant in Italy.
