Carmine Persico was shot five or six times.He and his friend Alphonse D'Ambrosia were in their car and a passing vehicle drove by with members of the Gallo gang fired at their vehicle,hitting Alphonse in the chest and Carmine in the face. Carmine reputedly spit out the bullet in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.
Harry Riccobene On June 8, 1982, the 72 year old mobster was seated in a phone booth talking to his 22 year old girlfriend, when the beefy 5-foot-10 Wayne Grande jogged up to the booth and shot Riccobene five times. Riccobene, tough as a bull, charged out of the booth, wrested the gun out of his assassin's hand before he collapsed. Grande fled.
On May 8, 1991 two shooters ambushed "Fat Pete"Chiodo at a gas station in Staten Island where he was working on a car. Chiodo received 12 bullet wounds in the arms, legs, and torso, but survived the attack.Doctors credited Chiodo's 500 pound weight for saving his life; his massive girth prevented the bullets from penetrating a vital organ or artery.
Sal Testa also survived numerous assassination attempts. The first time, Testa was sitting outside a restaurant in an Italian market, when a Ford Sedan slowed down and a sawn-off shotgun poked out of the window.
