De Niro for Mafia role for thriller

The Oscar-winning star is tipped to play Mafia kingpin Carlos Marcello in the big-screen adaptation of Lamar Waldron and Thom Hartmann's book of the same name, reported Showbiz411.com.

Leonardo DiCaprio is already on board to produce the film (through his Appian Way company) and star as FBI informant Jack Van Laningham. He becomes the confidant of Robert's character in a secret undercover operation, leading to his confession about ordering the assassination of then US President John F Kennedy.

Jack Van Laningham's son Craig also revealed at the Cannes Film Festival that David is attached to write and direct the movie.

David has already reunited with De Niro's Silver Linings Playbook co-stars Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence for his next film American Hustle, which is filming in Boston.

He is also considering taking the reins on drama The Ends Of The Earth with Jennifer.

Good pick can he nail the down south talk

He can probably nail down the "cajon-wop" accent. But Carlos was pretty chunky towards the end, be interesting how they'll pull that off.

It'll be interesting to see a movie about New Orleans. Maybe they'll include Trafficante as well.

I can't wait to see it. I've always been fascinated with and really admired the NO LCN and the whole Marcello era. DeNiro is going to more than likely play a gear role as The Little Guy. I always have said DeNiro as Capone was one of the best portrayals of a Mobster. I can almost see DeNiro being made to look like just like Marcello as they did with him as Capone. Maybe not as big of a fat suit but he will have a little weight. Excited to see it.

@NickyEyes - I hope they include Trafficante and maybe even Momo too. Was Frank Ragano also Marcello's Lawyer?

I hope this doesn't happen personally. How many times can Deniro play a mobster? It's worn out, i'd rather he played a peanut inspector than a mobster again!

It has the potential, but it is HARD even for us Southerners to pick up the Creole coon ass accent that they have in Louisiana. I know Marcello was not born there but he had that accent and you really have to be around them a lot to understand it. I used to work in Bossier City every year and picked up on it, and some of my best friends were "deep south" Cajuns that were still hard to understand at times.

I'll probably watch this, but will probably pick it apart due to the accents being wrong. I think DeNiro can nail the look as Marcello was not always as big as he was during his prime. He only got fat after he became big time.

Marcello's family is another one of my favorites too, many people think because he was in the South he didn't wield power but he was feared by many and even those up North knew not to play around with Marcello. When he told the "Yanks" that if they came into his territory he better be warned beforehand you better believe it was. He was the Iron Fist in the South.

When DeNiro played Jake LaMotta in Raging Bull,he gained a lot of weight to play the role. I think at the time ,it might have been a record. So he might surprise us all with a natural,as opposed to fat-suit, Marcello. I for one never get tired of DeNiros's gangster roles,as he seems to really capture the nuances unique to the characters he portrays.

ya but deniro is pretty old now i dont think hes got it in him to be gaining/losing lots of weight for movies.

It ought to be a good one. Usually anything with DeNiro is good. Will be watching for it

DeNiro has a mob comedy opening on SEPT 13 called "The Family". Looks like a pretty decent cast.

I seen the previews, looks a little too silly to me.

When I first moved down here from NY state I couldn't get over hearing Italians with a southern accent. Now we have an Italian Mayor with a southern accent so I hear it all the time. Sure DeNiro can master it.

Where you at bigboy? There is a difference between "coonass" and "redneck" accents. Just not sure DeNiro can truly pull it off. It's very hard to explain for sure.

Mehhhhh......it's pretty hard to nail a Cajun accent. I just hope he doesn't sound like the people from Swamp People.

He did a pretty good job with his southern draw in Cape Fear.

I agree with you but southern draw and Cajun are two totally different languages to me. Anyone can prolong the word "Y'allllll" but the Cajun accent down here is downright dirty

Yep there is a huge difference between redneck and Cajun. If you have never spent time in LA you'll never understand true Creole. Took me years to learn it!

They should get Edwin to do it. He was in Marcello's pocket and hes already busting out on Reality Television
