It seems like the Bonnanos have always been a dysfunctional and violent family. Even under Joe, the family seemed destined to fail. Wars, murders of the higher ups, large scale drug dealing, Pistone, Faraci, Massino etc. I guess it's just circumstance but what do you guys think about the Bonnanos history of instability?

The bonnanos best years seemed to be under joe bonnano, but when he refused to retire and wanted his son to succed him it diveded the family. Then later on galente tried to take over bc he thought he was the rightful heir of bonnano and we know what happened to him. And ofcourse the famous three capos, trincchera, sonny red, and giacclione, that thought they could pull off a coup. And the donnie brasco embarssment. The family seemed to be pretty stable and profitable under massino much to the cause of them not being a top priority of the fbi at the time. But when the fbi went after them the house of cards came down and every1 started to flip. Their dysfunction seems to come from both circumstances and that they were always more of a street operation, heavy into drug dealing and loansharking and theft(not that all the other families werent also doing this) but they were never really overly involved in more sophisticated rackets to the extent that the other families were and i think that has something to do with it.

Poor leadership more than anything.

I would agree with the fact that they were more of a street operation. The brains required to get the most lucrative rackets just never seemed to be in the leadership.

I dont really agree about them been so much dysfunctional in the past. They were big in the drug biz and they made a lot of cash. And wheres the cash there are murders and wars. And yes when you r in the drug biz you r more close to the streets. Not only drugs, they used to be big in clothing factories and cheese firms, funeral parlor's,pornography and many many pizza parlors. The Bonannos had most power until Profaci's death in 1962 i think.I also think that the first main reason for Bonannos downfall in the 60's was C.Gambino...also the internal war and Pistone that came after.

Yeah, the Bonannos seem to have had their share of union interests up into the 1960's. It's probably not a coincidence that was also the time that Joe Bonanno was forced out and the family found itself frozen out of a lot of labor racketeering endeavors thereafter.

I think Bonanno was a poor boss in terms of organization, to centralized. He kept the best rackets (unions, garment district) for himself, tended not to trust people who weren't Castellamamarese and promoted people based on family ties, not upon merit. He ran a tight ship as long as he was there, but as soon as he wasn't there to run it all it started falling apart.

This life of ours, this is a wonderful life. If you can get through life like this, hey, thats great. But it's very, very unpredictable. There are so many ways you can screw it up.-Paul Castellano (he would know)

Internal strife does more damage to the mob than the feds.

Partiarcas under Salemme
Philly under Scarfo and Stanfa
Colombos wars
Bananas war then Galante and the three capos
Luccheses under Amuso/Casso

Genovese and Gambinos haven't had any wars and they are the strongest.

That's quite an ironic statement of yours since the most lucrative racket happens to be drug trafficking. And the Bonannos were pioneers in setting up large scale international drug trafficking. They became a dysfunctional family in the mid 1960s, before that they were a tight-knit, streamlined organization.

Bad leadership at the top since Joe force retirement.

From now on, nothing goes down unless I'm involved. No blackjack no dope deals, no nothing. A nickel bag gets sold in the park, I want in. You guys got fat while everybody starved on the street. Now it's my turn.
