According to John Dickie, there is a myth of three Spanish brothers and knights Osso, Mastrosso and Carcagnosso who in the middle ages fled from Spain and took refuge on an island off shore Italy. They had fled because their sister had been raped and killed and they revenged the crime by murdering the perpetrators. On this Italian island they invented the rules of the honored sociaty. Osso then went to Sicily and formed the Sicilian Mafia, Mastrosso went to Naples and formed the Camorra and Carcagnosso went to Calabria and formed the ndrangheta.


This a myth told to all new ndrangheta recruits, I should add.
