Mike Huckabee says this Benghazi thing will end up with serious issues, and it would allow them to consider Obama's impeachment. Ordinarily I would write such nonsense off as the usual drivel that oozes from Fox "news," but given the make-up of the House of Representatives, and their reluctance to do anything, a witch hunt and impeachment scenario would -- in their minds -- probably be a goo thing politically. It would burn about one year of time, so they could avoid Immigration, Gun Control and other issues, and it would allow them to go for Obama's legacy and all the while trash Hillary. They would also see it as a way for the GOP to reclaim the "tough on terrror" label they have lost.
I am not saying this is a sound idea, but it is a definite possibility.

DT, an impeachment proceeding would be a political maneuver that would consume enough House time and resources that it would postpone the House's addressing some unpleasant issues and policies. Of course, there's only about 16 months until the House elections, so Republicans have to consider whether an impeachment proceeding would at least maintain Republican control of the House.

Impeaching Obama over Benghazi seems far-fetched. On the other hand, as Jerry Ford famously said when he was a Congressman: "An impeachable offense is anything Congress wants it to be."

Seriously the GOP aren't going to impeach Obama because there is nothing to impeach him for. He's an ineffectual president, a bad leader, and a super left hack in my opinion, but the republicans know they can't win voters without cooperation on these key issues (immigration more than gun control)

Some on this board seem to keen to blame Fox news and the GOP for any political issue that goes wrong in this country. You wanna blame someone? How about both of the arrogant pricks on BOTH political parties who still refuse to cooperate with each other in the face of one of the most uncertain times in our history.

well said sir! one of the biggest problems facing us today is this silly devotion to one team or the other. yes fox news sucks, but anyone claiming that while at the same time looking to msnbc as a beacon of truth and honest unbiased reporting should really have their house inspected for lead paint. how about this novel concept: lets actually put partisan politics aside for a bit and try to find out what happened in benghazi, and hold them accountable, even if they have a D next to their name.

This congress lacks the gonads to think about an impeachment, especially when there is no basis. It would sink congress' approval ratings even lower in the long run.

Ok, what is going on with the world recently. I thought this thread was old, but it is from TODAY? TUHDAY!!!!

Gosh women trapped for 10 years??? People shooting up schools?? Psychos gassing theaters???

But believe me, Obama won't be impeached. After all Bill Clinton got away from being impeached or at least got off easy.

Now if it was Romney, they would be plastering him with impeachment papers.

Not only would it not help their cause, it would sink their already record low approval rating.

In case anyone hasn't noticed, there are several posters on this forum who are totally for "Team Obama" and "Team Democrat." I've seen it over and over again. They have no objectivity whatsoever. Some of them pay lip service to being fair but it's a charade.

As TB has posted above, an impeacheable offense is what the US House of Representatives says it is. Although the Republicans would control the House's Judiciary Committee, its consideration of such an offense(s), while pleasing the Republican base, would alienate many idependent voters and could have an effect on the mid-term elections.

Olivant, your long term analysis is correct, however there are some in the House who are short term thinkers who are beholden to "the base." My concern is some wacko proposes it in a committee, and through fear of being "primaried" it gets to the floor of the House where Boehner loses control.
No chance of a "conviction" in the Senate, but there are some people in the House (and in the contry) who would go to any length to tarnish Obama in this way.
If I were in the GOP and a long term thinker, I would advise this issue hang around to be used against Hillary in 2016.

True DT, but one of my points is that I think an impeachment proceeding stands a real good chance of damaging continued Republican control of the House in the mid-term elections.

Olivant and DT you're assumptions about what would happen are probably correct. However I do not believe that this topic will move beyond the hypothetical stage. Obama will not be impeached because despite my personal dislike of him and that of many others, if one really was honest there is nothing to impeach Obama for. The republicans know this. If they want to keep the house and withstand an assault by the presidents political team, they have to move forward with immigration and it would be wise to give way a little on gun control however I doubt that will happen with the latter.

Franky the GOP is in desperate need of moderates, and I mean ones that leave religion out of politics and take on a more fiscally responsible approach. People who adhere less to Glenn Beck and Grover Norvquist and a more Scott Brown/Marco Rubio attitude.

You are exactly right Joe, but it seems right now the most extreme element has some kind of sway over the more moderate voices. IMHO they are holding their own Speaker hostage.

Notice how this Benghazi digging, it went from Obama the Evil Guy Responsible to now Hillary the Evil Witch Responsible. Convenient now that we're onto '16 and not '12 anymore. Huh.

Give me a smoking gun guys, not some more smoke up my ass. This same "evidence" was around last year and it did dick politically. Why? Because it connected A to C dots but ignored (or couldn't find) B, which you need to successfully make a political attack.

Hey remember when the right-wing were so happy Susan Rice went down in flames that they thought it meant Kerry would be SOS and Scott Brown would get his Senate seat back. Opps.

So yeah the days of Fox pretending Hillary is honorable and competent compared to the Kenyan are now over and we're back to the Evil Clintons. Ah the 1990s are back! Where's my Sega Genesis?

I have no idea who should go down for Benghazi. Obama? Hillary? Others? But we do know that A) somebody screwed up the protection the embassy should have had; and B) the administration (in the typical liberal PC way) lied about what caused the attack, scrubbing any mention of Islamic terrorists. And now, after sitting on it as long as they could, even the mainstream press outlets are now finding themselves forced to report on it.

It's also amusing, though not surprising, to see the usual partisan hacks on this forum doing their best to defend their guy here. rolleyes

Now there's this:
Quote:
IRS singling out of 'Tea Party' being investigated

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An investigation of the Internal Revenue Service was launched on Friday after a senior IRS official publicly apologized for subjecting conservative political groups to "inappropriate" scrutiny.

In a practice that drew complaints during the 2012 election campaign, groups with the words "Tea Party" or "patriots" in their names were flagged for closer IRS review when they applied to the agency for tax-exempt status.

"We would like to apologize for that," said Lois Lerner, director of the IRS tax-exempt office at an American Bar Association conference. She said the practice "was absolutely incorrect and it was inappropriate."

Lerner said screening of the conservative groups was "absolutely not" influenced by the Obama administration.

In what could be a major embarrassment for the IRS and a potential distraction for President Barack Obama, the matter is under investigation by the IRS inspector general.

I've a pretty good idea who is to blame. Those who cut government funding and then whine when there's no budget to ensure their safety. You could care about one of these issues. It's like starving servants and then wonder why they don't clean up your house well or why they curl up and die.

It's not just the GOP claiming additional funding wouldn't have made a difference in defense of this one, lone building.
It was also Charlene Lamb, senior official in the Obama State Department.

You keep telling yourself that if it helps you sleep better at night. But fact is, that $300 million that was cut, would decrease personnel numbers and safety all around the world.

I'm telling you what a senior official in the State Department, the very department in question, said back in October.
