Photographs reportedly showing what the F.B.I. described as the remains of a pressure cooker used in one of the Boston Marathon bombings were published by several news agencies on Tuesday evening. The Associated Press reported that the photos were distributed as part of a joint bulletin to law enforcement agencies b the F.B.I. and Department of Homeland Security.

A Fox News affiliate in Atlanta published other photos, including one the F.B.I. said showed the remains of a black nylon bag that might have contained one of the bombs.

As The New York Times reported on Tuesday, investigators now say that the explosives used in the bombings were likely rudimentary devices made from kitchen pressure cookers and loaded with sharp metal objects meant to kill and maim. The pressure cookers were filled with some type of explosive powder and triggered by ordinary kitchen timers, one official said.
