Anthony Nicodemo, a reputed mob soldier, was formally indicted by a grand jury Monday afternoon on first-degree murder charges for a December homicide in South Philadelphia, the Philadelphia District Attorney's office said.

Nicodemo, 41, of the 3200 block of South 17th Street, is charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy and several illegal possession of firearms counts for the slaying of Gino DiPietro outside the victim's home in the 2800 block of South Iseminger Street at about 3 p.m. Dec. 13.

Later the same day as DiPietro's murder, a police source told the Inquirer that investigators matched a bullet fragment found on DiPietro's clothes with a gun found in an automobile registered to Nicodemo.

Last month, the city DA's office used a newly revived indicting grand jury option to present its evidence against Nicodemo. Yesterday's indictment was the culmination of that phase of the county's case against Nicodemo, which bypassed the preliminary hearing phase that for years defendants had a right to.

He now faces a formal arraignment next month and is being held without bail, according to online court documents.
