It has been speculated the reason Renda was tortured was that he was the money guy and they were trying to get info out of him for that reason. As for why they didn't send a message by leaving him somewhere he could be found, I'm not convinced that the same groups were behind the murders of Nick Jr, Nick Sr' and Renda.
