We wanted to do something different with it – very difficult in an area where everything has been done before – but we dare to think this is something new. Normally using an image from the past means, ‘recycle’ or ‘greatest hits’ but here we are referring to the title The Next Day. The “Heroes” cover obscured by the white square is about the spirit of great pop or rock music which is ‘of the moment’, forgetting or obliterating the past.
However, we all know that this is never quite the case, no matter how much we try, we cannot break free from the past. When you are creative, it manifests itself in every way – it seeps out in every new mark you make (particularly in the case of an artist like Bowie). It always looms large and people will judge you always in relation to your history, no matter how much you try to escape it. The obscuring of an image from the past is also about the wider human condition; we move on relentlessly in our lives to the next day, leaving the past because we have no choice but to.

Why “Heroes”?
If you are going to subvert an album by David Bowie there are many to choose from but this is one of his most revered, it had to be an image that would really jar if it were subverted in some way and we thought “Heroes” worked best on all counts. Also the new album is very contemplative and the “Heroes” cover matched this mood. The song Where are we now? is a comparison between Berlin when the wall fell and Berlin today. Most people know of Bowie’s heritage in Berlin and we want people to think about the time when the original album was produced and now.
Pri...I mean "3rdEyeGirl" or whatever struck again.
Interesting slower, more R&B flavored retake on a Top 10 hit for him, replacing the original track's Springsteen-esque pop rock storytelling.
So yes enjoy this folks before it gets yanked pretty soon. Maybe tomorrow, maybe next week, maybe before you finish reading this post?
What intrigues me, and something P fan boards really have not catched up on is that this was filmed. (Recently at his Chicago concerts if I understand it correctly.) God knows all the concerts he's had filmed and could make a good money stream from his fanbase if he released them on DVD or allowed people to buy it online.

Speaking of Mr. P, a blast from the past in "Sexy MF."
Ridiculed as he was for his trek into hip-hop, and this did flop in the U.S. (peaked at #66 on the Billboard 100), but this went #4 in the U.K. and #5 down in Australia. I actually quite like it, even if I can't decide if by his vocal tone he's full engaged the gangsta rap game or somehow ridiculing this?

I listened to Gilbert O'Sullivan's beautiful song "Claire" a few days ago and it's still in my head. It got me thinking about a couple of his other hits. "Alone Again Naturally" is a great song, but has to be the darkest, bleakest song ever sung. When a song begins with a man just minutes away from committing suicideby leaping from a tower and then becomes more depressing afterward, you know it's a downer.
On the other hand "Get Down" was one of the upbeat hits of the 70s that deserves a lot more air time.

Yea Kly, "Alone Again Naturally" tho a very good song IS quite a downer. I heard it just the other day.
Oh, and while we are talking songs we just heard, what about "Rock On" by David Essex? I love that song.

Interesting note worth sharing that Prince fans (or me and Lilo pretty much) should consider with the new website to buy songs of his.
In 2010, he sat down with the Peach & Black podcast team (a great podcast fans should subscribe to) and told them that he was getting ownership for his masters back from Warner Bros. after 30 years from its original release has lapsed. He also informed them that his first 6 albums (at that time) he had already remastered them and was just waiting to be released.
Now we're in 2013, and by then he's subsequently regained ownership (if what he said was true) of CONTROVERSY and 1999. Next year, he'll get back the crown jewel of his discography in PURPLE RAIN...which was his 6th album.
Not saying anything, but theoretically he could put those first 5 albums up for sale at any time on that 3rdeyegirl website or any future website of his, remastered and make all the money for himself.

The funny thing is I don't know if I would want to hear Dirty Mind remastered. The demo sound really worked at that time and for that release. But I'm sure eventually I'd wind up getting a remastered version out of curiosity if nothing else.. What do you think?

As far as Prince goes, I can only speak of his earlier work. I really liked When Doves Cry, Purple Rain & Kiss, Rasberry Beret. Little Red Corvette was ok, and didn't he do "Party Like It's 1999?" 99? So passe'

Honestly I'm more worried that he'll mute or dub over the curse words and risque lyrics. (Prince, leave "Head" alone!) And there's always a chance that his remastering mixing will blow, not just merely enhacing the fidelity of the recordings to keep up with technology.
I have all his albums. The only remastered album that I want really to see (or hear) happen is SIGN O' THE TIMES, if only because the CD was issued in the dawn of CDs when they were notoriously arguably muddy-sounding.
But otherwise, I'm all about the goods raided from his Vault: Outtakes, alternate versions, all that. (Like the original, much longer version of "Adore.")

News on Prince's next album? To say the least, I didn't expect this if true.
Quote:
•PEOPLE ARE talking about Prince's new CD, now in its planning stages. Prince is a great fan of the 1960s group Love. This band -- headed by Arthur Lee and Bryan Maclean -- was the first racially mixed rock band. They mixed a lot of styles -- classical, flamenco guitar, blues and hard-driving rock. Some feel Love was the forerunner of the much more successful The Doors. There were dramatic problems within the band, and the original group broke up in 1968. Their three albums are cherished by music aficionados.
Now, Prince wants to cover all of Love's great songs in a tribute album. Well, it would a profitable, smart way to introduce it all to a new generation that seems completely in the dark about the pleasures of Love.
You know usually I don't bother covering the musical output by Beatles offspring, but I must say this new track by Thenewno2 (Dhani Harrison's band) is actually really really really really good. Incidentally that track, plus the album from where it's from (also composed by Thenewno2) were recorded at Abbey Road Studios.

Prince on sunday on his 3rdeyegirl website released a new song, the acoustic track "That Girlfriend Thang." Dr. Funkenberry revealed tonight that he wrote and recorded it on that same day.
