Interesting... and not unexpected. This film, from everything I've heard (I've not seen it yet), will definitely be a major player at the Academy Awards and will probably set some box office records.

Here's a bit of trivia, of a sort: Some of the best portrayers of Abraham Lincoln have not been American: Daniel Day-Lewis is British born, and holds British and Irish citizenship. (And Liam Neeson, originally considered for the part, was born in Northern Ireland.) Raymond Massey and Walter Huston were Canadian. Roy Dotrice, who did an excellent one-man show as Lincoln on stage and TV in 1981 (available in its entirety on YouTube), is British.

What the hell, I say... after all, acting is acting. It's either good, or it isn't.

I mean, if Meryl Streep can play Margaret Thatcher... wink

"No. Saints and poets, maybe... they do some."

I heard yesterday (tho can't remember if it was an on-line story or on tv) that they are making more copies to distribute to theaters because it's doing much better than they expected. I haven't seen it yet either but want to.

First off, its only nearly 2 and half hours long, or only 6 minutes longer than the new James Bond movie. Tell your buddy that.

Second, I recommend it. Sure I have my complaints about the corny opening and ending going on too long, but otherwise that's mere fringe complaints. At core it's a pretty good movie, at times even oustanding. It's entertaining, it's engaging, several good laughs, it's intellectually stimulating, terrific produciton values, and great acting. Shit I think three Oscar nominations are coming this movie's way. And Daniel Day-Lewis WILL win his 3rd Best Actor Oscar, which would be a first in Oscar history.

Or in otherwords, go see it. What else you going to see this weekend, that RED DAWN remake?

Quote:
I’ve just learned that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has invited Steven Spielberg to screen Lincoln on December 12th. But what’s different about this invitation is that Reid is offering to provide the U.S. Senate to Spielberg as the theatre. Reid’s invite only recently went out — and I’m told Spielberg will accept for his movie to play in the historic setting. No one is yet sure if this has ever been done by a movie before.

When you think about it, this is very obvious, but still worth noting.

Quote:
As of its November opening day, more people watched the movie’s London-born star, Daniel Day-Lewis, play Lincoln, than saw or heard the real Lincoln in his lifetime.

Just saw the movie last night, it was very well done. Oscar worthy in my opinion.

Tommy Shots: They want me running the family, don't they know I have a young wife?
Sal Vitale: (laughs) Tommy, jump in, the water's fine.

Counting the votes with the Oscar gurus (who live and breath betting on nominees/winners), LINCOLN will have many nominations. Picture, Director, Screenplay, Actor (DDL), Supporting Actor (Jones), Supporting Actress (Flying Nun), and some tech nods.

I'm expecting DDL to make history as the firt person to win three Best Actor Oscars. Not so sure about Jones and Field. It'll depend on who they'll be running against. (I could easily see, believe it or not, DiCaprio being the favorite for Supporting Actor if he gets the nod for DJANGO UNCHAINED.) Field at this rate is expected to lose to Anne Hathaway for LES MISERABLES. (Can anybody actually pronounce that title correctly? I never could.)

But the night is still young. I've not seen one movie this year so far that I thought or believed would win Best Picture. Many contenders like this and ARGO, but no clear bad mother fucker with a gun walking away from the explosion. Maybe the well well reviewed ZERO DARK THIRTY, but I haven't been able to see that one yet.
