Yup.
Sometimes immigration authorities replaced last names with the place of birth, due to the different designs of name tags. They used to wear pieces of paper with their first, last names and town of birth written on it.
So: ANTONIO (first) BUIZZA (last) BRESCIA (town) became Mr. ANTONIO BRESCIA.
And it happened to all immigrants, Gremans, Hungarians, all...
