It´s most often a captain who supersedes the boss temporarily as an acting boss while the boss is away. These are the ranks within a Mafia Family: - Boss - Underboss - Consigliere - Captain - Soldier Obvously the highest position in the Family (the boss) is the most important rank. When in prison, the boss delagates his underboss, consigliere or a captain to run the Family for him. But the boss still holds the most important rank within the Family.
