But not letting anymore people to join is better IMO. Then you'd have the same situation that Angelo Bruno had. No new members, maybe some posters die or stop coming to the boards. Its not hard to lose four or five of the top posters.

Either that, or new members are unable to start new threads for a probationary period (one month or so).
That's something to think about -- tho it wouldn't prevent a newb from replying to a thread already started. I'm not keen on the idea of closing the books because there are legit people out there, too, and it'd be shitty if that was me trying to get on a forum to ask a question and be locked out. But there may be things that can be done less drastically....
