Mexican Navy Troops have arrested Mario Cárdenas Guillén, who shared the leadership of the Gulf cartel with Jorge Eduardo Costilla Sánchez, El Coss.

Shortly after 14:00 in the facilities of the (Siedo) the authorities will be making the announcement at a press conference in which the detainee will be presented to the media.

Federal officials assured that the Semar elements arrested Mario Cárdenas Guillén El Gordo, who has been noted as the substitute of Osiel Cárdenas Guillén since he was arrested in 2003, despite being incarcerated in the prison of Matamoros where he was admitted in 1995 after being accused of committing the offenses of organized crime and crimes against health.

The alleged detainee remained imprisoned until 2007 when he was released after completing his sentence.

Mario Cárdenas Guillén remained from 2003 to 2007 in the maximum security prison Puente Grande, Jalisco, where he was transferred on the grounds that he supposedly directed the Gulf cartel operations from the Matamoros prison.

After the death of Ezequiel Cárdenas Guillén, Tony Tormenta, in November 2010, Mario Cárdenas openly shared the leadership of the Gulf cartel with Eduardo Costilla.

"El Gordo" was arrested Monday by elements of the Navy after an operation in Altamira, Tamaulipas. He was found with a rifle, two grenades, cash, cartridges, a vehicle, and four bags of cocaine.

During the press conference it was reported that Mario Cárdenas Guillén is the brother of Osiel Cardenas Guillen. He is a suspect in several preliminary investigations.
