Such as say a guy that hangs out in the city, one day ended up meeting a connected guy, built a friendship, and then ended up showing interest in the mob? Would he have a chance to become a mobster himself? Or would they pretty much ignore him cause he didn't grow up in the life?

There's been alot of mobsters who didn't grow with tne mob who became capos or even bosses like Massino who didn't become an associate till his mid to late 20s. I'd guess it's more common to be born into but who knows there's been some who went to college before becoming involved with the mafia . There's also been some people who've became involved through marrying a mobsters niece or daughter .
