When I was in high school centuries ago, each NYC high school took in students from several adjacent neighborhoods. The kids from the neighborhood where most students were drawn from always looked down on the kids from the other neighborhoods. So, when I attended Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn, most students were drawn from Brownsville and East New York. The handful of kids from Canarsie were derided as lepers or worse.
This thread reminds me of that Lark cigerette commercial of the 70s. Remember that one: "Show us your Lark." Also, remember George Carlin's parody of it: "Don't try that Lark thing in the Bowery." Those guys will show you their larks, man."
