I am appalled, but not surprised, that so many adult Americans expect the President to fix so much. I posted elsewhere that our Nation's oeconomy, both macro and micro, is hugely complex. The What If spreadsheet at Exxon and Shell probably takes up 100 PC monitor screens and their strategic planners probably drop like flies from exhaustion trying to figure out pricing structure.

By the way, gas down here is $3.49.

the President can do very little to control the price of gas at the pump besides releasing some oil reserves from texas for a small temporary relief

people in the states complain about gas prices, but in reality the USA has the lowest cost for gas in the western developed world if I remember correctly

DUH! tongue

I'm just hoping this doesn't stall the recovery. I'm afraid that it will. We are a commuter population and we are reluctant to get out of our cars. Given recent toll hikes, it wouldn't surprise me if people were spending $100 a week to get to their jobs if they have to cross a bridge to do it.

The more people have to spend to get to work, the less disposable income they have. And that s**t just rolls downhill.

Oli, I threw the Pres in there for an election year soap box item. Unless he can broker some kind of peace with Iran...we're F***d.
As far as the macro and micro, the general public (and me) can even scratch the surface on understanding world economics and the intracacies that lie within. Hugely might be too small a word.....just ask the Greeks. lol

Well, the blame certainly does NOT entirely lie with the President, but one could (and the Republicans are) making the case that Obama's blocking the pipeline and over-regulating is the first mistake. His pushing uneconomic alternative energy is the second. His non-active stance on foreign matters which is a dare to the leaders of countries like Iran and Venezuela to challenge him is his third mistake. And these all add up to a coming crisis, and I have a feeling it's going to get UGLY this summer.

We had a record setting mild winter this year meaning energy demands are down, so prices certainly shouldn't rise. However, the oil companies (bastards that they are) took their supply overseas to places like China where the demand is at a record high, and this rise in demand overseas increase the prices everywhere.

But we do indeed have the lowest energy prices in the world because we've been able to utilize our own domestic energy supplies and those of Canada/Mexico.

I don't know why the difference. Maybe it's $5.00 in L.A. but I just went to get gas this morning and paid $4.21 (not that that's not bad enough). I'm sure glad I'm not working anymore cause that 60 mile round trip would really take a big hunk of my budget. rolleyes

My husband travels about 70 miles roundtrip, plus a bridge toll. It's eating up a HUGE amount of our monthly budget. I paid $3.74 for gas last night at Costco. Strangely, our NY Costco sells gas for less than some stations in NJ. And you don't have to be a Costco member to buy gas there.

It's about four months since I last posted here and the price has dropped some 30¢ in that period. It USUALLY rises as we enter the summer driving period. confused

I just heard a prediction of gas prices falling under $3 a gallon by Halloween! Bring it on!!

The price here has been in a steady free-fall in the last month. I've seen $3.51/gallon locally; the lowest price in a long time.

I'm sure Obama will use that in his re election bid. $3.51 is pretty good for the NY metro area. I saw $3.17 this morning (cash). I'm sure Olivant is down under $3.10.

I don't get it. PA was always 15-20 cents higher than Jersey. When we were up the river last month the PA prices were the same as Jersey. Now you're lower. Who changed the tax? PA or Jersey? WTF.

South central PA gas prices are typically cheaper than the northeastern PA prices because local gas taxes vary significantly throughout the commonwealth. Lebanon and Lancaster are even cheaper than York and Harrisburg.

Okay TIS, get ready!

By NBC News wire services

(UPATED 1:39 p.m. Eastern) RICHMOND, Calif. -- Analysts say a fire at one of the country's biggest oil refineries will contribute to higher prices at the pump on the West Coast.

The fire at the Chevron refinery in Richmond, about 10 miles northeast of San Francisco, broke out Monday evening. Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at Oil Price Information Service, says Chevron's refinery is big and important to the market.

With inventories of gasoline in the region already low compared with the rest of the country, Kloza says pump prices in California and elsewhere on the West Coast will soon average more than $4 per gallon.

Thanks for the good news Oli. lol I hadn't heard of the Richmond fire. All I can say is I am glad I am not working anymore or I'd be paying an arm & a leg with a 60 mile daily round trip.

It's $3.49 here. This semester I'll be teaching in two places that are each about 60 miles roundtrip. My wife wants me to give up one of them. However, she won't even consider giving up her new Lexus which she bought in June.

We're at $3.55. I drive approximately 350 miles per week, which is far less driving I was doing a couple years ago.

I figure it's about 50 miles a day. Some days I might drive 200 miles and sometimes it might be only ten.
