Yea, I saw only the headlines of that story. How scary that must have been. This guy is described as "crazy"? And of course crazy & guns DON'T mix. Am I understanding he actually got away? I thought they got the guy. TIS

Fish Story Rodney Akey has fished the St. Joseph River for 40 of his 46 years. This last year has been drastically different, and not for any good reason.
Diagnosed in August with kidney failure, the former lathe operator has spent the following months bouncing from doctor's appointment to dialysis treatment to doctor's appointment. And for his fishing trips, he's never alone.
"I'm not supposed to do anything that's too strenuous," the Niles resident said. "That's why I always have a friend with me."
That extra pair of hands, in the form of buddy Will Skalla, came in handy late in the day on May 22. Akey hooked into a record-setting fish that could be considered well beyond strenuous. By the time the 30-minute struggle ended, he had landed 49.8 pounds and 45.7 inches of flathead catfish — the largest ever caught in Michigan.

My Dad was one of those who helped pull a guy from the ledge as he was trying to escape the shooting. He also helped subdue Harrington. He got a certificate which I have around here somewhere. Detroit — It will be 30 years ago Monday when Detroiter Robert Harrington, incensed over an insurance dispute, burst into a law office in the Buhl Building with a shotgun, pistol and jar of gasoline. He shot to death Eve August, a promising 24-year-old law clerk intern, and his actions injured — some critically — 38 others in what came to be known as the "Buhl rampage."
Now, survivors and family members will gather three decades later in a private ceremony to remember the attack and celebrate August's life.
"Growing up, the world I knew always involved her," said her brother Lou, a 53-year-old Washington, D.C., resident. "She had such vivid qualities to her. She was incredibly kind and incredibly verbal. I never stood a chance against her in any argument whether I was right or wrong."
For August family members, the memorial promises to be cathartic. For others, it may be bittersweet.
"It's been 30 years of recovery. I see every day the effects it's had on my husband," said Vivian Hudson, whose husband, Lester, was a partner in the Bell and Hudson firm. He fell from an eighth-story window in the attack. He was critically injured with head injuries and never practiced law again. http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20120...ook-for-healing

Wow Lilo, quite a story. It certainly must have had a huge impact to remember it 30 years later. Nice memory to keep showing your dad as a true hero. Thanks for sharing. TIS

Lilo, what a nightmare to have lived through, but how proud you must be of your dad's actions that day! Was he a first responder? Yes and no. He worked for fire department but had since moved into inspector rank by that time. He just happened to be in the building for some other reason which I can't remember now. There are usually a lot of police and fire personnel in and around that building which is why it was so shocking for anyone to do such a thing.

Wow, that's a great story, Lilo. You must be very proud of your dad. My dad had something of a different denouement:He was a NYC fireman. One day in 1955, while his fire company was on building inspection, he spotted a toddler sitting on a a sixth-floor window ledge across the street. Without hesitating, he ran to the building. The toddler fell just as he got there, and my Dad caught him in his arms. This story got talked up in that Brooklyn neighborhood (Bed/Stuy), and the Daily News sent a reporter and photographer to our apartment in Brownsville. They interviewed my Dad, and took a photo of him holding my brother (who was five, not a toddler) in his arms in the way he caught the kid. We were dying for the story to run. When it did, they not only didn't use the photo, but they spelled his first and last name wrong! Andy Warhol said everyone would be famous for 15 minutes. My Dad had his 15 minutes, I guess...

TB, Oh man!! What a great story and what a hell of a time to get the info wrong. STILL, what a wonderful act of heroism on your dad's part. He must have been left with a great feeling in the end AND left his family very proud. TIS

These homes are among the oldest, nicest and largest in the city. They tend not to have the modern amenities like forced air heat or ac and are a beast to heat and cool but they also have workmanship that can't easily be found today. I did not grow up in this neighborhood but always liked to visit. If I had real money I would love to move one of those homes to a country estate. Slideshow Despite the heat, nearly 2,000 people from all over the region walked on the east side of Detroit on Saturday to view historic homes open for the 39th-annual Indian Village Home and Garden Tour.
"There's a lot of mystique about Indian Village," said Jason Hill, 38, a village resident and real estate investor. "The tour creates more of an interest in the neighborhood, and the neighbors embrace it. It's a sense of pride for Detroit."
Hill said he and his wife, Dara Hill, moved to Indian Village 13 years ago just to be married in the wrought iron gazebo in the Indian Village Centennial Garden across the street from their home on Seminole. It is available for only residents' use.
Indian Village is one of the city's gems. Houses dating to 1895 earned it a place on city, state and national historic registries.
Saturday's tour also included several gardens, including one on Seminole created over the years by resident Oscar Paskal's late wife, Dolores.

New Jersey woman sues Little League player after she was hit by ballSource: NewsCore
MANCHESTER, N.J. -- A New Jersey woman is suing a Little League baseball player for injuries caused after she was hit by an errant throw two years ago.
Elizabeth Lloyd is seeking at least $150,000 in damages [other sources say $500,000] after suffering "severe, painful and permanent personal injuries" when she was hit in the face by a ball at the baseball field in Manchester Township, myFOXla.com reported.
Catcher Matthew Migliaccio, who was 11 at the time of the incident in 2010, was warming up before a game and overthrew a ball to one of his team's pitchers.
Lloyd was seated at a picnic table close to the bullpen when she was hit. At the time, Migliaccio checked if she was hurt, and she reportedly said, "I'm fine."
Attorney Joey Jackson said that there is a legal doctrine known as "assumption of risk."
"It means that when you go to a baseball field, you have to be alert, you have to be aware and you have to take precautions so that you don't get hit ... If she was aware and alert, she wouldn't have been hit. Don't sue this little child," he told "FOX and Friends."
The lawsuit claims Migliaccio "intentionally and/or recklessly struck, assaulted and battered" Lloyd.
But the boy's father said the Little League should have resolved the issue.
Just heard about this now; it happened just 10 minutes away from here. I think she's just looking for insurance payments. It'd be quite ridiculous to actually expect half a million dollars from a 13-year old.
I studied Italian for 2 semesters. Not once was a "C" pronounced as a "G", and never was a trailing "I" ignored! And I'm from Jersey! lol Whaddaya want me to do? Whack a guy? Off a guy? Whack off a guy? --Peter Griffin My DVDs | Facebook | Godfather Filming Locations
