State cuts benefits for lottery winner A statement issued Wednesday evening from department Director Maura Corrigan said Clayton is "now no longer receiving benefits," but it was unclear when the action was taken.
"DHS relies on clients being forthcoming about their actual financial status," she said. "If they are not, and continue to accept benefits, they may face criminal investigation and be required to pay back those benefits."
After taking a $700,000 lump sum and paying taxes, Clayton pocketed about $500,000 and bought a new home and car, Euline Clayton said.
News of Amanda Clayton remaining on food stamps was first reported this week by WDIV-TV (Channel 4). In an interview, the single mother of two said she's still "struggling" after winning big on the Michigan Lottery's "Make Me Rich!" television show.
"I thought that they would cut me off, but since they didn't I thought maybe it was OK because I'm not working," Clayton told WDIV. "I feel that it's OK because I have no income, and I have bills to pay. I have two houses."
"When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives." Winter is Coming
Now this is the Law of the Jungle—as old and as true as the sky; And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the wolf that shall break it must die. As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk, the Law runneth forward and back; For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.

I mentioned this a few years ago. When I was working at the school, we had a student who's last name was Boyd. Do you know what his "legal" first name was????? Pretty Boyd. Oh, make that Pretty Boyd II, after his father. Maybe a family name hu? Poor kid once told me to "please call me by my middle name" (which I don't recall now.) Nobody felt comfortable calling him Pretty. TIS

I knew a guy, Jim Class, in college. As bad as that was, he was the SPITTING IMAGE of Tony Perkins in "Psycho". Yea, that sure would suck. Even more so if his first name was Norman or last Bates. TIS

The numbskulls are at it again here in the Land of the World's Stupidest Criminals: Police clocked a guy speeding on a motorcycle and gave chase, with lights and siren on. The guy made an abrupt U-turn and, with rear tire smoking, sped off--but not before waving to the cops in the car. Then he crashed the bike, and attempted to run away. Cops caught him. His excuse: he thought his mother was driving the car--that's why he waved. The newspaper account said: "The arresting officer asked him if his mother drove a police vehicle, with lights flashing and siren sounding. 'Uh, no,' he replied."

Here we go again from the Land of the World's Stupidest Criminals (and most shameless defense lawyers): Michael Poyner was sentenced to 16.5 years in prison today. Seems he was firing his shotgun randomly in front of his home. Deputies ordered him to drop it. He leveled the gun at a deputy, who shot him. Poyner recovered, and was charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and other felonies. As a "mitigating factor," his lawyer said he had "undiagnosed mental issues at the time of the shooting and had attempted to deal with them by getting drunk." Patrick Ellis, a process-server for a local firm, was sentenced to two years' probation for failing to serve 13 summonses on drivers who ignored photo radar speeding tickets, and falsifying paperwork to show that he did deliver them. His lawyer offered as a "mitigating factor": "He wasn't trying to make a personal profit--it was just that people don't like to be served with speeding tickets."

Not my area, but I'm sure you NYers heard about the Jet Blue Pilot who blew a casket. Holy crap! He had gone a little nuts and got locked out of the cockpit door by the co-pilot; pounded on the bathroom door telling the occupant he had to use it. He mention Iraq/Iran and told everyone to pray. They had a passenger on tv earlier today and she said he had some kind of meltdown and literally went crazy. She said afterwards the passengers all agreed that they had, what she referred to, as a "911 moment" when they wondered if this guy was really a pilot. BUT she said everyone remained calm as flight attendants/passengers wrestled this guy to the ground. She said it almost seemed like a script from movie and expected Harrison Ford to show up and save the day. Can you imagine? 2 people shot and killed less than a mile from my house. One of my high school friends had been shot in the neck by a sniper during his 3rd tour in Afghanistan about 10 months ago died last month after over 100 surgeries. http://www.jconline.com/interactive/arti...?nclick_check=1Army Sgt. Jamie Jarboe, 27, of Frankfort died Wednesday in Topeka, Kan., from injuries suffered April 10, 2011, when a sniper's bullet hit him while he was on a foot patrol in southern Afghanistan.
Funeral services are pending, said a representative of Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel in Topeka.
Jarboe is the 10th local or area member of the military to die in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The total U.S. deaths in both wars is 6,367, according to the Military Times.
Jarboe was a 2003 Frankfort High School graduate. His parents are Andy Jarboe and Joy Shoemaker.
The Topeka Capital-Journal reported Monday that Jarboe, who had been in hospice care, suffered a collapsed airway last week.
On her Facebook page, his widow, Melissa Wallace-Jarboe said, "We will carry on with a military memorial here in Kansas and will also do a memorial in Indiana for friends and family to pay respect. Jamie's mothers and father will attend the military memorial at Fort Riley (Kan).
"There are no words that can describe what this last week has been like knowing that my husband and I would never have a life we always dreamed of."
Jamie and Melissa Jarboe, 32, celebrated their one-year wedding anniversary on Feb. 14, Valentine's Day. She has two daughters, Celestial and Alexa, whom the couple was raising. The family made their home in Topeka and were contemplating adopting a child.
Sgt. Jarboe was assigned to A Troop, 1st Platoon, 4th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division based out of Fort Riley, Kan.
He was deployed Feb. 28, 2011, to Forward Operating Base Wilson, which is near the city of Kandahar. He also has two previous deployments to Iraq, where he won a Combat Action Badge.
The sniper's bullet hit Jarboe in the left side of his neck, damaging his trachea and surrounding area, along with his upper spinal column. The massive injuries left him paralyzed from the chest down. He also had difficulty swallowing and talking.
Jarboe rehabilitated at Walter Reed National Hospital in Bethesda, Md.; Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore; and Craig Hospital in Denver.
He underwent more than 100 surgeries in 10 months. Last August, Jarboe began to talk and continued to rehab.
According to the Topeka newspaper, Jarboe flew to Topeka on Feb. 17 and received a hero's welcome. He was then taken to a Topeka area hospital where he continued the fight for his life.
Melissa Jarboe said on her Facebook page: "Jamie wants his friends and family to remember him how he was, not who he became."

Back in 1979, Etan Patz was 6 years old and disappeared on his way to school one morning. No trace of him was ever found. He was the first child to appear on a milk carton and changed the way that missing children cases were handled. I read the book "After Etan" that dealt with the years after his disappearance, and what happened to his family. It was one of the most compelling, yet difficult, books I've ever read. The FBI is currently back in Etan's old neighborhood because they think they may have found traces of him in the basement of a handyman that lived there back in the day. I hope his parents are able to finally find some closure. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57417579/cautious-optimism-in-search-for-etan-patzs-remains/
