Wills has been vilified by the Vatican time and again for questioning Church doctrine, yet maintaining that he is a true Catholic. I disagree with him heartily about many of the things he has written over the years, but I agree with him here. The Church remains in the dark ages where contraception is concerned. I've discussed it many times with different priests over the years, and you might be surprised to find out that many of them feel the same way. It's not uncommon at all to see progressive nuns handing out condoms in the more urban areas of the country.
